Surf
Description
Hi, my vehicle started out as a standard 1991 Surf with a blown head. After many months and not to mention a few dollars she can now hold her own in the best of company. I built up a new 2.8L Hilux engine and modified the crankshaft and block to except a crankangle sensor as I wanted to retain the auto transmission. I also wanted to keep the electronic fuel injection. So we have a 2.8L turbo diesel with boost gauge, boost controller and a 2.5 inch full flow exhaust as well as a manual transmission radiator and a large auto transmission cooler which work very well. I then gave her a 2 inch suspension lift and a set of 31/10.5/15 Mickey Thompson MTZ tyres and a winch bar with a 9500Lb winch, spot lights and a snorkel. To improve the ride I fitted a set of big bore foam cell shocks and upper ball joint spacers. This Surf came with open diffs front and rear so they have been replaced with a Locka front diff and free wheeling hubs and an ARB rear air locker and ARB compressor. For those long trips I have fitted an additional 70L fuel tank where the spare tyre was and moved the spare to the rear bar. I have also fitted extended breathers to the front and rear diffs and the transmission. To finish it off I have added a cb radio, roof racks with roof top tent and side awning. The rear of the vehicle is fitted with a draw system and fridge slide and 55L fridge and duel batteries. I am now looking at the possibility of fitting an intercooler and having the engine chipped. She went to Cape York in August 2011 and had no trouble doing the Telegraph Track both ways. I am planning another trip to the Cape with my brother who has a Hilux extra cab in July this year to explore some of the more out of the way spots.
