How do you know your steering dampers still work?

how do you know when/if they are still working?

Disconnect one end, mark and loosen the return to centre spring if it has one, and push/pull on it to see if its dampening evenly in both directions. If it has an eye bush at one end it will help as then you can stick a socket extension in there as a handle.

I had one fail so it had no resistance/dampening in one direction and it made for some interesting handling on a potholed road, the bumps pulled the steering wheel from my hands and each hit just about turned my sierra into the trees.
