GU Patrol buildup into a towing tourer

Unread post by shogg_98 » February 1st, 2019, 2:24 pm

Bought a very second hand GU Patrol from a car yard in April 2018.
It came with an Aluminium bullbar, Lightforce Genesis HID driving lights, 2” lift and a Safari snorkel. Not much in the way of mods, but a start. Looked like it had been used for touring / towing in the past. Oh, and the TD42 diesel had a factory fitted turbo and had done 420,000 kms.
There was a tapping noise from the diesel engine, that went away when the engine was under load, so figured it can’t be too bad of a problem, probably just needed a tappet adjustment, which I paid Nissan to do, but only slightly reduced the noise.

One of my first mods I did was to purchase a stainless steel bash plate from Custom Offroad to protect the radiator and steering arms. Promptly painted the bash plate bright red before bolting it in place.

Next came an XROX bullbar and WARN Tabor 12,000 lb winch, then a set of draws in the back, all from Opposite Lock.

Then sadly, the old TD42 broke - starter motor was unable to kick over the old donk so figured something had gone wrong internally. Pulled the block out, ripped off the head and discovered in number 1 cylinder, little bits of metal sitting ontop of the piston, stopping it from turning over. Where did these bits of metal come from? Pre combustion chamber had cracked and fallen apart. Number 2 pre combustion chamber was also loose in the head (but not cracked) and number 4. So that solved the mystery of the tapping noise that I couldn’t make go away unless under load!!!

Right now, the donk is off getting rebuilt. Will post some updates on the engine rebuild as they are completed - get ready for some serious performance mods on this baby!!!

A short video I put together of the Patrol, before the engine died, but after I had the XROX bullbar and WARN winch installed. This was a trip out to the Glasshouse mountains to test out the winch on a section of track I was pretty sure I would need the winch, seeing as only a month early I needed winching. As Murphy’s law goes, the old Patrol powered up that section of the track no problems, rendering the winch into a 12,000lb paper weight!!
