Soooo anyone come up with any other suggestions?
I've been watching this thread closely thinking that sounds like such a pain, but I'm glad it's not me at least.

Well now I join ya haha :woohoo:
I had the lights come on doing a run around to a few shops and thought "sweet I know how to fix this" so I waited till I got to a mates.

First crappy little bolt broke, oh shite. Spray wd40, wait, loosen the other two and move around.
Nothin.
Then driving home around 100km out they go. Stop off at shops near home for the missus and then back on. so I think righto I'll pull it all apart and clean it.
It works, drive around the streets in and out of 4wd Hi/Lo all is sweet so I put her to bed.

This morning they're back on, stop off on the way home to get a screwdriver kit thinking well I better have one in the car by the looks of it.
Adjust in the carpark, no good.
Adjust on the side of the road, no good.
Adjust at the shop near home, no good.
I'm out now of adjustment
This one is definitely an annoying one, was also meant to go into the mountains this weekend too :irked:

Mmmm bummer, anyone got one ? Lol
After I posted I've been looking into it, I have read these forums a lot, but have other people had the speed sensor diagnostic result too?
I checked the resistance that was meant to be on that sensor and I get 0? Should be 300? Maybe broken?
Kinda hoping its that as I imagine it's a heap cheaper, but has anyone tried replacing it?
Once again I'm sorry if I missed it, I'm tired and my eyes are sore I've read so much.

I think speed sensors are around the $170 mark from Ford.... You can take it out & give it a clean, nothing to lose.. Also double check that the plug is making good contact & not full of crap...

Have you actually run the diagnostic test to see what code is stored?

Still sounds dear for a little part but always start off cheap hey, Ill check stocks today but will definitely clean it before I do anything else.
These little things are $50-$70 for a lot of other makes.
I wasn't game to pull it out last night without a replacement in hand, looks like it just pops out?

I ran the test many times, always getting back to the same code.
I have ran the test with either of the two connectors a part and also both.
Different codes come up when the connectors are apart, then after clearing codes and all connected back up, always back to VSS code.

I noticed too that when clearing the code, with test light ground, turn keys to on. The 4x4 lights come on and then disappear after the 5 seconds. You can take the test light off and then start the car and the lights stay off, until trying to select 4wd.
So this morning Im going to try and see if they will stay off until I get to work!

My auto 2nd hand 4WD module was $440, manual ones are less and easier to find, might be more an auto module problem ?

Yeah it could well be an auto module issue, but going off the code it's pointing to the speed sensor. An item known to fail in many makes of cars and usually cheap, this one is $230.
I will try the clean out method tonight now I know availability and price.

Also after resetting the diagnostic test, it went all the way to work without an issue.
Might jimmy rig a little wire into the cab with a button, can do from drivers seat then.

The car is not in 4x4 mode regardless of the lights & moving the selector switch is not altering it from 2WD mode. The shift pattern has altered. Not to the same extent as it would in 4wL, but noticeably different.

Another really weird thing is that the speedo has changed. When doing about 60KMH, the speedo is showing just under 30KMH. The scan-gauge is also indicating the same & no fault codes are coming up..

We are supposed to be towing the caravan on a trip just after xmas, & I don't want to be towing with this issue..

Anybody had something similar or have any ideas?

This is an old post, but this was what mine ended up doing before giving up the ghost.
Fleetwood I think you solved this with the module fiddling about adjustment.
Mine ended up totally going and fixed beaut with the new 2nd hand module.

Hey Les...

Yeah that's my original post at start of this thread almost 2 years ago!... I had limited success fixing it until about 6 mths ago when I manipulated the shift motor position sensor plate.. I finished up taking that plate off altogether for a sticky beak & clean up... Been completely faultless ever since. I make a point of selecting 4WD at least once a week to check all is still well..

I had various fault codes. To begin with mostly the speed sensor, but then mostly shift motor position sensor fault code

Fleetwood, when you had the speed sensor error, did you test the sensor by the manual?
It is meant to have about 300 ohm resistance, mine has zip.
Meaning totally open and buggered from what I understand.

I understand what you guys are saying about the second hand 4x4 module, but mine has never thrown a code other than the vss?

Anyway might have found a wrecker nearby last night so I'll ring today, might get the whole transfer lol.

fleetwood

I never got any fault codes in all my time with shift issues.
Just the weird lights on, still 2H, speedo reading like it was 4H, etc.

Might clean up the old one and keep as a spare, swap out briefly and see if it is ok, rare as hens teeth the auto ones.

Anyway, hope those with issues get them sorted ok, bloody terrible time not being able to change when desired, sometimes it was inconvenient, other times a total PITA.

The code I get I am meaning from doing the diagnostic test, not a fault code seen through the scanner.
When I get the new one next week I will be testing first and make sure the resistance is showing, then I will know for sure.
Such a pain not being able to shift, but at least with my button/wire hooked up I can clear the lights when I start and drive with a normal speedo :)

Yeah mate, worked for me for a few sticky times too.
Hopefully if it stays like that for you it won't cost a replacement module in the end.

Sitting in the camp behind Flinders Beach dunes on Stradbroke Is right now, the last of the fires embers keeping my toes toasty . . . about to retire to the swag.
Everything worked perfectly on the beach today, after a couple of years of deteriorating uncertainty with 4wd selection.
Great weight off my mind, I tell ya :)

Omg les way to rub in mate! Painted a picture there bud.
Glad to hear it went well, it definitely makes you feel better about your fourby when she's going well.
Hopefully my new sensor arrives Monday and see how that goes.
I wish mine was fixed by rotating the cap :(
