Track Closures - tell us where you have been locked out of.

Unread post by Rick » November 11th, 2010, 1:02 pm

G'day guys,

Track closures have become more and more common of late, with National Parks, State Governments and even local Councils all doing their best to tell us where we can and cannot go in our own backyard.
Whether its a track that has been gated, or even a camping area that has been restricted (with bollards etc that dont allow camper trailer access), we want to know about it.

This is the thread to list down all of those tracks, campsites or even whole areas that have been either closed off or had their access restricted. We want to know about it!

To get the ball rolling, here is one of my childhood favourite campgrounds that has had restrictions imposed, as well as one of my local wheeling destinations.

Post up your experiences with restrictions, and be sure to tell us where, and what the restriction is, just like the examples below.

CAMPSITE: Wheeny Creek
WHERE: Wollemi NP, NSW
RESTRICTION: Bollards that prevent vehicle access to campsites

TRACK: Jacksons Lane
STATE & REGION: Yellomundee Regional Park, NSW
RESTRICTION: Tracks gated to prevent vehicle access

Deep Creek Conservation on the Fleurieu Peninsula SA.
Used to be many tracks and more camping spots but not many now.
Same with the Mt Lofty Ranges from the Fleurieu to the Barossa Valley.

Urban sprawl, changes of land use, tracks leased to landowners, regeneration, etc etc are some of the reasons for closures and restricted access. Oh, 4wdrivers and trail bike riders being dickheads and doing the wrong thing is another one.

If the area that you have been locked out of is a National Park, State Forest, Reserve, or even just council land, be sure to mention which park or forest it is.

Cheers,

Rick.

Lifted off this site.

The site has not been updated in quite a while.

Calabash Road, Arcadia. Closed - Feb 03
The start of the track passes through the property owned by Warren Cole of 95 Calabash Road, Arcadia.

This is a track through private property. Whether it is a gazetted road, recognised fire trail or whatever, the owner has every right to refuse permission to transit his property. Under such circumstances, be aware that for anyone entering:
- insurance cover is void, and they are liable for charge of trespass.

4WD NSW&ACT are negotiating access with the porpoerty owner. We are trying to determine what we can do to gain his permission for us to take organised club trips through his property.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wirraba Ridge & The Face, Wollomi NP, Permanently Closed - Apr 96
Wirraba Ridge track and The Face in Wollomi National Park have been closed for a number of years. The entry point to these tracks are not well signposted and gates have been by-passed.

On the June 2003 long weekend, 28 4WD vehicles and several motor bikes were photographed in the area and NPWS are issuing infringement notices. Penalty for illegal access is $3300.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fred's Hill, Yengo NP. Permanently Closed - Confirmed 20 Jun 2003
Fred’s Hill, aka Staircase Hill in Yengo National Park is confirmed as closed. A meeting and site inspection with NPWS was held on Friday 20th June. This has established for both NPWS and the Association reps that the two mentioned trails are one and the same. Further information will be provided when mutually agreed drafts are released by NPWS and 4wd NSW & ACT.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Spanish Steps - Newnes State Forest
State Forests closed the Spanish steps and the link track between Sunnyside Track and Blackfellow Hand Track in 2002, due to unaccetable liability and insufficient resources to maintain the track. Since then 4WD NSW&ACT has been working with State Forests to establish controlled access to this area, with cover under the 4WD Clubs' public liability insurance.

Until the gates and access controls are in place, the track is open again to the general public. When the gates are up, clubs affiliated with 4WD NSW & ACT will be able to collect the key for pre-booked trips under a controlled access scheme.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lost City - Newnes State Forest
The final descent to the Lost City was closed off by State Forests towards the end of 2002. The track was closed because the edges of the track had been excessively eroded by vehicles avoiding the rock steps and an unacceptable risk of vehicle damage and personal injury.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stockrington, Rio Tinto Property - Mt Sugarloaf
Many of the most popular tracks in the Mt Sugarloaf area are on minimg leases, including those held by Rio Tinto. None of the mining lease holders currently permit driving on their property and all have posted signs. Although the signs might read "Enter at Own Risk" they indicate that entry is NOT permitted by the land owner.

The Association, through the Hunter Regional SubCommittee has been working towards regaining entry for our affiliated clubs on a controlled access basis. Unauthorised entry by some is making this difficult.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hunter Main Range - Wollomi NP
The Hunter Main Range track between Putty and Rhylestone (Dunn's Swamp) was closed to the public in Oct 1999.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Settlers Road/Paynes Crossing - Yengo National Park
The Paynes Crossing access through private property remains closed. Entry is only from the Putty Road until further notice.

The 4WD NSW&ACT LandUse team is working with NPWS and the nearby pastoral company to establish an alternative route. We are also pursuing negotiations with the land owners.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cheers

Not only do all our tracks get closed every year in the wet, but so does the main roads. Haha.

All the tracks around the Pentecost river, along the old karunjie road are prohibited now. Because of a wannabe cowboy and his half assed pastoral lease. Cant access the river to go fishing or camping, or sight seeing. Been going there for 20+ years and now no longer allowed just because he thinks he is a big time cowboy. Yet Carlton Hill station run 20x the amount of cattle as him over an area 10x larger then him, and anyone is allowed along the Old Wyndham-Kununurra road to access the Ord river.

I contacted Parks in Tas and enquired about access to Southport and they assure me that there is access to the Lagoon via an alternate track. Can you confirm or deny this for me TazMAV?

This system has been in place for 18months that I am aware of....we got the keys to go in there last July for a club trip....
