hi there, im going to do this conversion in a few months time.
Just wondering what your opinion would be on whether to use a complete magna motor or is it worth getting my existing 6g72 triton heads rebuilt and then putting them onto a magna 6g74 bottom end? are the combustion chambers the same volume? are the coolant/oil gallery patterns the same? this would save having to bugger around with the cam angle sensor and coolant pipe but if the combustion chambers are different it will change the comp ratio.
Are there any other traps that could catch me out?
Theoretically this might work with a 380 motor too? but i dont think the budget would stretch that far...
Cheers!

Hi, as far as i know the heads are the same but you will still have the problem with the coolant pipe no matter which heads u use, its the taller block that puts the heads further apart thats the problem

Im running the 380 motor atm!! its the same process as the 3.5

I highly recommend getting it tuned if you go the 3.8

awesome, thats exactly what i needed to know! was mostly just worried about compression ratio.
Yeah a 6G75 would be awesome but im planning on keeping it all fairly simple at this stage because ive never had to use a custom computer/maps on any of my old cars and i dont feel i know enough about it all yet haha.
Love your truck by the way

Hahaha thanks, Some std ecu's can be re-flash/mapped depending what year your triton is. would still be worth looking into down the track :)

Hey Mitsman, have you had any success with your tuning?

Yeah i ended up paying some one to write a definition file, i can edit everything in the ecu, still really need to put it on a dyno to tweak the timing!!

you had any luck with yours?

cool... sounds great, I hope the definition file didn't cost too much? would you be willing to share such a file? or would you like something for it?

I bought a crappy piggy back thing which ended up being useless, another few hundred I threw in the bin.

I still have the openport I'll have to give it another crack as it sounds like you're having good success, are you using efi live?

I'm also looking at giving her some better breathing, I'm thinking of getting a pa challenger intake manifold, they were also on some mks & i think they have better flow characteristics, your thoughts?

Cheers

I just found an old message from you mitsman, mine was an auto but I converted it to manual, still using the original pcm though.

Happy to share mate, pm me your email address and ill sent it to ya. Im just using ecu flash and evoscan to log what the ecu is doing.

Not sure on the pa manifold iv never seen one but iv just put a nm pajero manifold on mine with a 65mm magna throttle body. Fair bit of mucking around to get it all to fit and didn't get much more out of it, little more mid range

Hey Mitsman, i found a couple of sweet looking 3.8's in a Newcastle wrecker today but can't do anything till i get back from my holiday, where's a good place to have it tuned after i installed it in Newcastle?
And do you have an idea of the cost involved?
I have done so much to the vehicle so far, i will be sticking with it for a while so i think the conversion is worth it, becides that i had my friends little turbo diesel sitting on my arse up a hill the other day...we can't have that happening now, can we?

24v sohc is a straight swap. Just make sure it has the mounts for the cam angle censor or make your own bracket. Some heads dont have it
