Bigger discs fitted, OK to take protecting plates off?

hi can anyone help me i just put bigger disc brakes on the front of my 1990 range rover and now the disc are rubbing on the disc protecting plates my mechanic said to just take the protecting plates off should i do it or will it stuff the disc

Those plates are often called backing plates or dust guards, and really don't 'protect' the discs all that much - I've rarely seen a disc take any serious damage just cos the backing plates were taken off, and leaving them there can be a real issue if the disc is rubbing on them.
