Gear box "clunk"

Unread post by DTech » August 19th, 2011, 8:35 pm

Hello everyone. I have an '86 Range Rover with a bit of slop in the gearbox. When changing gears on the move, the gearbox gives a big clunk when the clutch is pushed in. It has new gearbox and engine mounts and all the bolts are tight but it feels like something is slopping around.

Does anyone have any ideas what this might be? Something moving around in the rear suspension? Something internal with the gearbox?

It will be the spud gear that joins the gearbox to the transfer case - as long as the gearbox output shaft spines are not worn down (which they may be as well) the spud gear can be replaced with everything in place by going in through the large round plate at the rear of the transfer case.
