96 ES 3.9 Disco, Tow Vehicle??

Unread post by steelo » January 17th, 2013, 12:26 pm

Hi peoples, we have just bought a 96 (10/96 build) ES 3.9 auto Disco with 165000k's, I was just wondering what do I need to turn it into a good tow 4b (van comes in at just under 2.5t) but also have a bit of fun on w/ends, we are doing a round Oz trip next year. It is stock except for those weak looking scrub bars, so am thinking 2" lift with slightly "harder" rear springs, also maybe tranny cooler, what else?
We are pensioners so are on a reasonably tight budget so no over the top stuff please guys :D
Thanks

Hi Steelo,

The auto's in the disco are pretty tough. An auto trans cooler would be a good investment, if it hasn't been done a good service and check over by a transmission specialist would be good to.

If you are getting a lift installed speak with a suspension specialist and get one that will be suited to towing, airbags can be hand to level the vehicle out when the van is connected.

If the vehicle is used for towing only for your van trips then its worth setting up right.

I've towed a 2t van with my manual TDi disco and in 4th it tows nicely at 90km/hr. Manufacturer specs state a towing capacity of 4ton.

To help with the hip pocket an LPG conversion might be worth a look, the Rover v8 can be thirsty around town and when towing and the rover v8 runs well on gas, if its a good well installed system.

Thanks mate, at the moment I have a few other niggly little probs to fix up, auto being one (it does need a service) along with an annoying overheating whenever it wants too prob. I 've had the radiator rodded & engine flushed but it still seems to have one minute it's ok then the next it's hot then 2mins later everything is fine again. The engine bay is also quite warm up right up into the transmission tunnel??????

Has the thermostat been replaced? Could be a faulty thermostat, if its not opening at the right temp all the time it will cause that, it could also be sticking. Was the rest of the cooling system completely flushed when the radiator was rodded? Take the belt off and give the water pump a spin and make sure it's not all flogged out, normally they'll make noises when they give up the ghost. Start cheap and work your way up, a good flush out and new thermostat usually sorts out most cooling system issues.

Is it using coolant?

Forgot to mention, if the cooling system wasn't bled properly air locks can cause overheating because they prevent the coolant from circulating properly.

Did the thermo recently but haven't had a chance for a long drive yet as lost my licence for 1mth but got it back now, BUT have now got what I've been told, by local LR guy, is a leaking/blown manifold gasket on passenger side. Makes a bloody strange racket for a blown gasket but, just one more prob to fix :(
