1991 vitara - any motor ideas for a diesel conversion?

Unread post by darren94 » November 24th, 2014, 1:14 pm

Hey guys, I have a 1991 vitara that I am looking at doing a turbo diesel conversion in. Just looking at ideas on a good motor to use and has anyone done this.
Cheers.

there is not a lot that will fit in the space available, euro cars are likely to be more efficient, but possibly more expensive. BMW and VW make a 2ltr,Holden cruise make a 1.4 ltr turbo deisel and a 2.o ltr but they are new front drive. Suzuki make a 1.6 diesel for OS markets, that might be easy to fit if you can get one, or check here for more ideas

Consider a Freelander L series 2 litre (this is the earlier diesel to the BMW TD4 CRD diesel that was also fitted). Is pre CRD - is electronic but the electronics only control the timing of the fuel pump. It is a tough no nonsense engine. I had one in a Freelander and still going strong with 300,000km on it.

Should be cheap to find one - often you get the car thrown in as well so will have the ECU and loom.

You could also try a current Vitara diesel but it would be complex and expensive.
