XJ Cherokee won't engage 4WD

Unread post by toobs » October 4th, 2015, 9:45 pm

Hi all
Please forgive my ignorance as I'm not a Jeep owner but helping out my sister who just bought one.
The vehicle in question is a 2000 auto petrol.
I took the truck down to the beach to show my sister how to use 4wd, but found i couldn't get it to engage. The transfer lever is reasonably stiff but will select part-time and full-time, but i cannot get it into neutral and low range, and yes i did move the lever to the left as per the diagram. When the lever is in full time, there didn't seem to be any drive going to the front wheels. On the sand it was obvious and bitumen likewise, it did however make a sound similar to noisy bearings coming from the front after taking off. Moving the lever to 2wd resulted in the noise staying until I put it in reverse and drive several times. The wheels covered the hubs so i have no idea whether they are auto locking or not.
Does this sound familiar to anyone?
Thanks.

Sounds like the linkage needs adjusting
Google "xj transfer case linkage"

Thanks for that. I'll get onto it and see how it goes, fingers crossed that's all it is!
