Bigger tyres on T2...

Unread post by avion » January 16th, 2013, 7:58 pm

Hello, this is my first post. I have 1990 D21 import Terrano auto (HG46) and i had a fantastic run with it. Was thinking of selling it but decided to keep it as a backup vehicle :)
I've just purchased 1997 T2 manual since mechanicals are similar and i got a good price not to mention the positive experience with it's predecessor.
First mod i am thinking about is set of new tyres. Before i make an investment i am toying with the idea of fitting larger tyres. I've always liked 'skinny' tyres ie 235/85/r16. To run such a tyre i understand i probably need to change diff ratios front and rear. Would it be possible to swap diffs from my old T1 auto (4.625) instead of T2 manual (4.375)? I believe both Terranos run same axles front and rear ie R180/H233B. And if so is that enough reduction to run bigger tyres within similar powerband? (old factory tyres are 235/75/r15) T2 also has LSD as a factory standard which i would possibly swap for a full locker. I understand i will need to hack into wheel arches and probably do a body/suspension lift to accomodate that size.

I am running 31" on my T2. The all terrains fit great but I had to get the hacksaw out for the muddies of the same size. They seem to be wider because of the tread. No adjustment was required with the diffs but fuel economy did suffer as it will with any vehicle when you put on bigger tyres.

I have Mickey T's 31" MTZ's on my T2, along with Tough Dog 2" lift, no other mods needed and she goes anywhere, the pic is taken near to Prince Alfred Mine in the Flinders.

The normal tyres on the T-Rex are 235's. Years ago I got a 2"lift and put 31" A'T's on it. Still running the 31"Yokohama Geolandars. Very good all terranin. I also got a 2nd set of 15"rims and bought 31"Maxxis Bighorn mud terrains. These tyres are heaps wider than the all terrains. They are just wider than the guards and if the Dept of Transport get me I will cop a defect notice. The all terrains are fine, it is just the mud terrains. They are wider by a fair bit. Look good on the T-Rex but. I run the AT's for day to day use and throw the muddies on if I am heading off road.

Yeah I am not sure why there is so much difference between the all terrains and the bighorn muddies. The mud tyres were scrubbing on half lock so I had to get the hacksaw out. Same size tyres, 31"'x10.5x15 but you can physically see the difference between them. I did the dalbeg track earlier this year and the mud tyres lowered to 18psi just gripped on the steep hills. After I got the 2'' lift on the T-Rex the 235's looked silly. Way too small. That is why I went to 31''.

I think 31" would be the largest you could go without some mods to the wheel arches.
