2006 ST-R d22 questions ?

Unread post by Mgreen18 » January 18th, 2012, 9:21 am

Hi fella's,

Just wondering on a bit of advice and feedback on a ST-R navara d22.

Is the 2006 the last of the 3L turbo D's ? If so why did they stop making them in a 3.0L and revert back to the 2.5L ?
Would you even consider going a newer model 2.5L or this just way to small an engine for long hauls and towing a boat or camper trailer ?
Is the navara engine totally different to the 3L patrol engine ?

I've read lots of differences with fuel usage, some people saying 10L/100km while others up to 16L/100km for no real reason in the difference. Would this something to be concerned about in purchasing as that is a fair bit of difference if it cannot be explained within reason. In general would they be considered a thirsty vehicle ?

What sort of issues can be expected once over the 100,000 km mark ? clutch, wheel bearings, turbo going etc. General running costs ?

How do you rate your navara, would you buy another one tomorrow if you had to ?

Thanks heaps guys.
I was looking at other brand of utes but have recently seen alot of good looking navara's on the road and upon further investigation it seems to be alot of vehicle you your dollar. On average a 2006 ST-R with a few add ons going $20-24K's with 110-130K clicks on the clock which seems pretty reasonable I think.

I would be using it for general 4wd (overgrown tracks more than difficult terrain) fishing and camping, tow a 4.5m tinny later on in a couple of years.

Would the navara do the job ?

Sorry for the novel guys, haha
Looking forward to your experiences.

Thanks

Regards

Matt

the 2.5L diesel is a newer technology engine than the 3.0L diesel, and was first seen in the D40 Navaras and R51 Pathfinders....and makes 400Nm torque in those vehicles (though was detuned for the D22)

the 3.0L Navara diesel uses the same basic design as the Patrol engine, though from what I have read and heard, are far less likely to self-destruct than the Patrol version....

the current issue of 4WD Action (176) has a buying used review on the D22 Navaras, with a list of the most common faults, and suggestions on how to prevent/fix them...

I have an 06 D22 Navara 3ltr Diesel. Mine has 189 thou on the clock and still has the original clutch. The only thing I have changed is a front right wheel bearing and brakes pads. Fuel economy sits at 10.5ltrs per 100km. I love mine, does everything I need it to. I have used it on beach, dirt and mud and goes well. Just need some new rubber soon!

My 2006 D22 runs great. Keep the service up to it and go to the Navara Forum for heaps of advice as well as here.

Put good rubber on it and you will be suprised just where it will take you. Mine has a 2in lift, good rubber on standard rims and I go all over the brindabellas, bendethra and just got back from the vic high country.

Its got a rear airlocker which I have hardly used.

Standard Turbo desiel is a major plus as the Common Rail is a pain for mechanics out bush to work on.

Get one with low K's and you will do all right without paying overpriced toyota prices

the Navara would have a factory LSD wouldn't it???

which is presumably just as effective as a Patrol one....

did the ZD30 ever go to common rail in the Navara, or was it only the patrol that got that update??

yeah, a locker of any description is always better than an LSD, though the Nissan LSD is about as good as a factory one gets....

to answer one of the original questions though, I have found out that the mechanical components are mostly the same as the Patrol, but they run different computers, and this is one of the reasons the Patrol version has had more issues....
