Replacing Steering Wheel

Unread post by GQpete » December 18th, 2009, 7:39 am

G'day all, I need to replace the steering wheel in the GQ, molding in the original wheel has let go and moves around alot. I went to the wreckers and got a pulsar wheel and it is okay but I don't really like it, and it cost $85, I was in agony paying that but thought at the time it was a reasonably cheap alternative to a new one. I later tried another wrecker for a patrol wheel and he wanted $220 :(, so I phoned Nissan and they want $617 , after chocking on both those prices I turned to google.

I also checked the QLD Transport rules on replacing the steering wheel and this is fine provided the size is not reduced by more than 25mm diameter than the orginal wheel. The original patrol wheel is 400mm, so a reduction to 375mm would seem fine. The only problem is the majority of the wheels I have found so far are 350mm, making them an illegal mod. The price for a SAAS wheel is around $125 plus $60 for the boss kit, not bad considering they are leather and look pretty good.

Does anyone have any suggestions for the replacement of the steering wheel.

Cheers...Pete

Nissan Pulsar steering wheels N13,N14 and N15 bolt straight on, no mods needed.

Below is an steering wheel N15 and it has been fitted to N14 Pulsar with no mods so it would suit a Patrol also.

Thanks Sim, but it is really difficult to get one from a wrecker, and if they have one they charge a bomb for it and it is second hand. My preference is to look at the after market ones but they need to have a minimum diameter of 375 mm to remain with legal requirements.

gibbo82"

I am thinking a wooden one would be a good option, I saw a couple with some leather where you hold the wheel at 10 to 2 and they look great.

Where did you get yours from??

I'm pretty sure it can be done from home. Do a search on Patrol4x4 forums... Positive I saw the thread on there where someone used a syringe to inject some sort of glue etc into the wheel.

I went to Autobarn yesterday and they only have one wheel that is 370mm and it was $199 as well as the boss kit for $60. I was on ebay yesterday afternoon and found a SSS pulsar wheel for $85 plus postage of $20. The wheel was 370mm, so it is only 5mm too small, so I bought it, just waiting for it to turn up. I will have the other Pulsar wheel I bought last week available if anyone would like it, just let me know.

Cheers

What a shame.........
I bought a pulsar steering wheel at abc wreckers Boundary rd Wacol?.......for $10
I had a timber one but found it to slippery and to small and hit the whiper and indicator stalks all the time.
I think my steering wheel is from a n13 or 14. This steering wheel comes in a bit more than the original wheel I think. But anyhow I like it al lot!!

See yah

Big Dutchy, you were lucky to get it for $10, it would now appear I got screwed by the wrecker at Brendale, he hit me with $85 for the standard pulsar wheel. It will still be available and in fairly good condition just a little faded on the outside.

Cheers

Yep looks like I got rightly rooted. I will take a little more care next time at the wreckers.
