76 vs 105, anyone owned both?

Unread post by Roadwarrior » October 3rd, 2016, 10:22 pm

Hi Guys and Girls. I currently have a HZJ105 and will one day upgrade. Thinking along the lines of a 76 workmate. Turbo V8 (very appealling) and plenty of good ex govt fleet vehicles around and a lot cheaper on the used market than a 79 dual cab. Apart from the engine, basically same thing but with snorkel, spare tyre carrier and suspension seems to be same height as my lifted 105 .....all standard. However, the 105 has always been a bit of a handfull in the handling department as they are so wide. I Iike the fact the the 76 is narrower and even though both the 105 and 76 are solid axle, i reckon the 76 would have to handle marginally better for this reason. Would this be true?.
I know suspension mods, wheel alignments etc all play a part but mine are all good and set up properly. I know solid axles will never handle as well on the road as ifs but i have zero interest in a 200. The 76 seems the natural progression.

OTOH the 70 has the narrower rear track and leaf springs. I also measured out both and there's not as much room in the back of the 76.

Thanks Nilla
yes i have also measured. Doesnt worry me that much. Had the 105 ten years now and don't truck the kids around anymore (got their own cars now).
Guess a test drive on in a 70 is the way to go now.

Hi Roadwarrior
We had a HJZ105 for 14 years and have recently upgraded to a VDJ76R GXL.

For a while we were wondering if it was an up or downgrade but certainly wouldn't go back to a 105. A much better sitting position in the 76, fuel economy is better, power is wow. Quite a bit smaller but we have learnt to not carry as much crap when camping. Awesome for towing the camper, can sit on 100 all day, as a bonus the 105 wheels fit on the 76 which is good cos we had three sets of the 8x16 100 series rims (rigid axle).
Find a GXL if you can, after 2012 had factory diff locks and ABS, gxl has a clock too!

You wont look back.

Cheers
Peter

Thanks Peter. Ive decided to keep the old girl for another 100 000kms. I have the opportunity to buy one of our ex work utes, a hdj79 with the HD FTE engine pretty cheap. I might do an engine swap and wreck the rest as it comes with a spray tank and pumps and hoses on the tray as well as custom traybody. Should be able to flog it all off and part out the diffs and axels as it has the factory front and rear diff locks too.

Return to “70 Series”
