31" or 32" muddies on a 92 RV6???????

Unread post by twitch78 » August 7th, 2011, 11:49 pm

Hi all,

I am just putting a feeler out for anyone that has a similar or same model 4runner and has run 32 Inch mud tires. I have a 1992 v6 manual 4runner, full 2.5" hi flow exhaust with extractors, 2" lift and I am thinking of changing from 31's to 32's as I hear 33's zap the fuel and power too much.

Has anyone got any feedback as to a realistic power loss and extra fuel consumption if any for 32's?

Cheers,
Paul

I have a 91 2.8D 4runner and i have 31" mudzillas (they measure at closer to 32"...) Personally I think they are better for fuel economy on road - because of the larger rolling diameter = lower revs, and i dont notice any power difference off road, best mod i have done by far. That said i would not want to go any bigger without some sort of power upgrade.
my 2c.
Cheers,
Scott.

ok cool,

I have heard so much opinion but very little fact from people that have actually done it. I thought that with a larger rolling diameter the engine would work harder and in turn use more fuel but thatnks for the 2c!

had a 92 rv6 for 11 years, went from 31 to 32 and couldnt wait for them to wear out and go back to 31's. fuel economy is crap at the best of times in the v6 and 32 just make it so much worse. throws your spedo out big time to. Alright if your prepared to re gear and calibrate your spedo and diffs. Stick with 31's they will get you just as far as 32's and are a comon tyre if you run into problems.

Your 4runner being manuel will have 4.3 diffs gears in it. If you want to go to 33's you should change it to 4.55's or 4.88's and it will return it to factory gearing, which means it will have no effect on power or economy
my lux is only good for driving through puddles and i dont know anything.........

i ran 31" muddys for ages and finally got a body lift and fitted 33" muddy's.
BEST THING I EVER DID!
i had pretty much the same car as you, ('92 RV6, extractor, exhaust), execpt for a front locker, but the difference off road was amazing!
so many things that i used to get caught up on i just managed to clear, i still cant belive how an extra inch of ground clearance could be so awesome.

i would not run 33' tyres every day though, you are right the were not so good for economy, ok if you only did a couple of 100 k's each week but i used to do 1200 k's a week. not good for fuel expenses and also wears down your tyres quick smart. (i reckon a 50% worn muddie is only as good as an AT)

i ran a set of 31" AT during the week, and fitted my 33" on the weekend when i went away.

31" are so close to std that its hardly worth worrying about the size change. I found alot of tyre brand hard to get in a 32" size.

yes 33" tyres do put you speedo out, Yes they do use more fuel, But are they worth it?? YES

my advice, run a set of tyres for around town, and a set for when you go bush. no matter what size you end up going.

oh i was getting 13 - 14 L/100 kms with the 31" muddys

and i am usure as to weather you will fit 32" tyres on the same rims as 31". i know the 33" needed wider rims,

hope that helps

I'm thinking of putting 32x10.5x15 on 15x7 rims.
Anyone got any thought on this, can I get away with it with no lift?

redda,
you will be able to fit them on your car and drive around town but they will be no good off road as they will be constantly scrubing as you go over things. i'm guessing you want to fit them to go 4wd driving?
i had 31" originally and they used to scrub with out a lift occasionally and only at extreme angles with a 2" suspension lift. the best way to get more clearance fo bigger tyres is to get a body lift as this is the only lift that ensures your guards are further from the chasis and bump stops. but you will get away with 32" and a suspension lift
hope this helps

I have 32x11.5x15 BFG KM2's. I have the 2.8 diesel and havent noticed any excess fuel useage, although i guess that isnt much help to you seeing as we have different engines. I went from 31inch coopers. Fortunately for me my speedo was 10km's out. The new tyres have actually brought it closer to only 2km's out.

I think it really depends on what tyres youre actually going to get. If youre going to get a good set of all terrains or more road going tyres then i doubt you'll see much fuel useage difference. Most people ive spoken to have upgraded their AT's to bigger diamiter mud terrains then cry foul when they get bad fuel economy.

I guess the only REAL way to know is to either borrow a set off someone or bite the bullet and buy a set!

I have a 2inch lift and the 32's scrub very slightly on 3/4 full lock with compression. For 33's i'd reccomend a body lift as well.

I went from 31's x 19.5 m/t's to 32 x 11.5 " bfg km1's. v6 jack with extractors hi flow cat/***** 2 1/4 mandrel s/s pipe and snorkel,

the speedo ended up being 10 k's out doin 100 k says the gps , I didn't notice any diff in acceleration or braking, but the gears do feel slightly taller,

long story short about fuel economy, but I used to get 450 per tank, it went down to 400 per tank, but your actual travel distance is the same, if your speedo says you went a distance of 400, you actually went 440, so you need to account for the diff, looking at the optimistic side of it ;)
I didn't word that the best but you get the drift ?
