Are the 105 series good at towing around 3Tonnes? Are the 1HD-FTE sluggish? I was told their gearboxes were weak? Also what's the offset of the pre IFS steel rims? Zero?

I ended up buying a 76 series to tow heavy by recommendation from owners/specs, power, commonrail economy and a supposed stronger gearbox. But I really wanted a pre IFS 105 series 1HD.

There is no 1HD 105 series, the 1HDFTE only comes in the 100 series.

The 105 diesel is the asthmatic 1HZ, and not a good choice for towing 3t!

Plenty of people convert the 105 to 1HD, but it's an expensive exercise.

Thanks for the reply. I do recall my mates 105, but I don't recall if it was turbo or not. Either way, it was not very responsive. So the best thing to do would be buy a 100 series (the shiny ones) and it would be a good tow vehicle? Everyone says it has the same power as the 1VD-FTV. I just like the shape of the 100 better, and way more comfortable. Then again, after where I take them in the bush, I am glad that I have a white "industrious vehicle" as you cannot see the scratches. I would kill a 100 series paint job. When i looked at buying one, they were still fetching $55,000, compared to a brand new 76 series workmate for the same money. Yes, different layout and comfort. Was so hard of a decision, I just wanted an F250 but too much on fuel as a daily.

Yeah if towing is you're priority the factory turbo 100 series is hard to beat, hence why they still fetch so much money ;)

Hey Guys
Ive heard of plenty of 105 series being fitted with the legendary 1HD-FTE motor, at the cost of an arm and a leg as well as problems with the drive-train or gearbox not dealing well with the extra grunt. So i was wondering if anyone had done a solid axle conversion on a 100 series? Or knows a place capable of doing one?(Preferably in Perth) If the cost is lower or comparable to an engine swap then it seems to be the better option in my mind.
I ask because I'm looking at buying a 100/105 series and i wanna suss out which way I'm gonna go?

Cheers :D

you can't get a solid axle conversion done on a 100 series engineered. much easier to do the engine conversion. have you joined the '100 series owners group' on facebook? there's a few guys who have done it on there.
