HELP.... G285 lsd diff with 4.8 gears..

Unread post by All4Runner » December 25th, 2017, 9:33 am

Hey guys i have a trick question bout an annoying rear diff.. i have the g285 toyota rear 4pinion lsd apparently with some sort of locker inside... that doesnt matter anywho. It has 4.8 gears but what i want to do is leave 4.8 gears in and remove lsd carrier and put a open center in and i have a rear auto 100% locker to go inside.. my question is this possible has anyone done this.??

The crown wheel that governs the gearing ratio bolts onto the diff centre, so yes, it should be easy enough to pull the centre you have, unbolt the crown wheel, fit a new diff centre with auto locker in place, bolt the crown wheel to it, then replace in the carrier.

But be warned, if you are planning on using one of the cheapie Lokka type auto lockers, you will need to source an OE Open Diff Centre first, and I doubt very much that you will enjoy its locking/unlocking action, especially if you don't like the action you get now with an LSD centre in there to smooth it out! The cheapie lockers have all been modded by many with the addition of LSD's & damping springs & all sorts in fruitless efforts to stop the aggressive banging in & out or the loud ratchetting as you turn.... so I can't see you enjoying a step back in technology & operation if you already don't like the upgrade you have!

I believe you would be much better off getting a full on Detroit Locker centre from Harrop/Eaton; one of those comes as the entire centre, forged & machined into a much stronger & waaaaay smoother opertaing full auto locker just waiting for you to bolt up your diff gears of choice & install it into your existing centre. Then you jy st drive, secure in the knowledge that BOTH rear wheels are turning/driving all the time EXCEPT whenever one wheel is ground driven faster - ie, when you turn or change lanes on a hard surface! Fitted correctly into a rear diff, they are smoother in operation than many LSD's & all other lockers, especially the cheapies, and yet they allow full time drive to the wheel with traction as well as unlocking on the hards stuff if one wheel is turned as little as 2"/50mm further than the other by your steering input..... The Detroit Locker IS the auto locker all the others keep trying to work as well & as smoothly as; they've been around longer & developed way beyond the 1940's vintage technology that most of the cheapies still use, and if this sounds like an advert its only because I'm a long time user who is well aware of how these have improved over the years into the best & smoothest operating auto locker & traction aid on the market today - anything else, be it auto or mechanical or electric or air, is a lesser capable harsher operating compromise! ;)

I know many people who have had these latest version Detroit Lockers fitted who are positive that the job wasn't done as they drive off on the hard stuff... it's only when they get in the tough stuff and they go sooo much further and easier than anything else that that they KNOW the Detroit is in there doing its thing! :thumb:

That lsd works really well offroad no issues at all but occasionally on the tarmac it locks either side and there is an all mighty crack then it truck will drag then lurch forward on that side.. ive had toyota specialist look at it and my mechanic who builds 4bys for a living and they think there is nothing wrong with it other than worn clucth plates which according to them are still in good knick considering age. I have the typical clicking when i go around corners but locks on roundabouts going straight through only.. the paperwork for the rear suggests there is some type of internal locker..if this is the case it may be stuffed.. i have a yukon spartan locker for 30spline 8" but will not fit the carrier tried twice first time cost 750 with no luck so shimmed lsd while it was out. Mechanic said its internals looked different. Cheers for all the info i might just get the detroit considering sofar it has cost over 1000 on the rear and still annoying.

That sounds a whole lot like one of the early cheapie lockers stuffed inside the OE LSD centre, and yeah, it doesn't sound like much chop!! The Yukon Spartan will probably only go inside an open diff housing.... and it certainly sounds like not the one you have!! Get the right Detroit for the rear, and the only time you'll ever look back will be to see where you left everyone else where they got stuck & you just breezed on thru! :thumb:

Probably cost you about $1.2k all up, fitting, setting backlash, bearings etc, possibly a touch more; but hey, I really doubt that you'll ever regret it! I haven't owned a car (2 or 4WD) that I haven't put a Detroit in the rear of since about 1969 - they are bloody good, they just work, and they don't make driving or towing anything any where or on any thing hard, they just keep you moving when every/anything else is waaaay past giving up! ;)
