1995 80 Auto Petrol/Gas in low range & the auto changes up!

Unread post by dogtosch » December 30th, 2016, 3:57 pm

Help please legends. When in low range locked down in 1st on downhill descents or going uphill the auto changes into 2nd. This has only just started happening. It is a bit of a concern when its really steep. My 80 is very well maintained and serviced regularly. It also has a part time kit fitted. Could it have anything to do with the 2nd gear start button? My 80 has done 270k. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you ever had a full on Auto box service, ie check out the internals, bands, & filters etc as well as the more usual cursory fluid & maybe (if you're lucky!) filter change?? Many of these types of problems can be traced back to poor or lacking maintenance schedules, especially with auto boxes that may well have had the fluid changed every now & then (or even as per the schedules) but now that they are getting up in the kms, owners are finding slipping gear changes, running hot, or poor reverse selection etc, & this all can frequently be traced back to the fact that they've NEVER had the internals of their auto box serviced properly!!

Sooo, are you aware of yours ever being fully serviced properly!! I reckon that if you aren't sure, that'd be a good place to start! :thumb:

How floppy is the gearbox mounting? If going up or down hills it sits or tries to sit in a different place to normal because of worn mounts, that might cause the selector shaft to move to another position. When the load/attitude is off, then it might simply return to the original position and all is caused by the gearbox mounts allowing too much relative movement on the linkage.

Perhaps the area around the selector is full of mud and crap and it is moving bits and pieces around when you don't want it to?'

Thanks for your replys.Been away so sorry for late reply. Definitely will be getting a full service done Peter, its only had regular oil changes so that is a priority. Mydmax you have an interesting point as well as on the flat it doesnt do it and also when warmed up will not start without moving the tbar slightly so the starter motor fires, but when cold starts first pop straight away.
