My HJ61 has a Sensitive throttle - any solutions?
Hi guys and girls, currently having a frustrating issue with my 1986 hj61, the old 12ht has a extremely touchy throttle, i have put a heavy spring on the linkage to temporarily ease the issue, just wondering if anyone else on here has had a similar issue? And if anyone has a solution.

Doesn't have a throttle booster fitted by any chance?

Has it always been like this or is it something that has just started happening?
Manual or automatic?
Is throttle cable and if applicable Throttle position sensor (kickdown)cable adjusted correctly to factory specs?

Yep I have the same issue with my 12Ht auto and I know of at least another with a manual.
1st time I went wheeling in it it took a lot of getting used to. I now use the hand throttle or jam my foot into the kick panel so it doesn't bounce on the pedal going over rocks, washouts etc...

Ok I will give away a secret about the 60 series.
The touchy throttle is an easy fix but not to factory specs for adjustment.
Pull the hand throttle out 2 clicks and re-adjust the idle to normal idle rpm. Now adjust your throttle position sensor cable (kick down cable)to the factory specs.
You now have normal idle and shift points but the linkage sits in a different position that you should find avoids the sensitivity of the throttle.
If you are doing downhill you can push hand throttle in and your idle will be very low which helps with engine braking over slow rough stuff.
( The above of course is for auto but same adjustment for manual minus TPS cable adjustment still works)
As an FYI there is no such thing as a HJ61 it is HJ60 or Hj62.The term HJ61 came about to distinguish round headlight from twin rectangular headlight HJ62's but is not an official toyota model.

Hi Stock, I think you've got your diesel and petrol models ar5e about there mate.stockhorse wrote: As an FYI there is no such thing as a HJ61 it is HJ60 or Hj62.The term HJ61 came about to distinguish round headlight from twin rectangular headlight HJ62's but is not an official toyota model.
There is such thing as a HJ61 (see my round headlight build plate below) There is no such thing as a HJ62.
What you will find is that there is no such thing as a FJ61 but there is such thing as a FJ62 which are all official Toyota models.
