Engine conversion HJ60 - will a 1HD-T fit?

Unread post by cjm4x4 » June 28th, 2014, 5:47 pm

Hi Guys & Gals,

Just looking at buying a 60 series wagon and I want to know whether an 80 series 1HD-T engine would fit into a HJ60 Cruiser. Cheers.

Hey mate a few years back a saw a 60 for sale with the 1HD-FTE factory intercooled turbo diesel (the electronic injection motor of the 1HD-T as 1HD-t is still mechanical injection) so would be able to be done

You'd get just about anything in those engine bays mate, its just a question of engineering and how much $$$ you want to spend.

A 1HD-T conversion including buying the motor you wouldnt get much change out of $15K. 1HD-FTE as mentioned above would be $20K+ easily.

Thanks Guys. The 60 series I am looking at is in good condition at a reasonable price so I don't mind spending a bit of $$$ to get it to a anywhere can go rig. From research, the major modification required to fit the 1HD-T motor in is the engine mounts. I think the original gearbox will need upgrading soon as well, so might look around for a full driveline replacement.

Hi Sick60, yes I have been looking around for a HJ61 with a 12HT which would be great but not too many of them around for sale and in reasonable condition (Unless Shaun Whale is going to sell his chopped up 60 series, haha). Just looking at the options as the 60 series I am looking at is mostly kitted up for camping and touring already, but will need some work to the engine and driveline in the near future.

No offence to the 12HT but i would go for a 1HD-FTE over the 12HT the 1HD-FTE has bucket loads of more power and torque Just note the 1HD-FTE out of a LC100 has more power and torque due to being intercooled from factory were the LC70 utes and troopy are not intercooled from factory that is why there is 2 different power figures for the 1HD-FTE

12HT specs The 12H-T is a 4.0 L (3,980 cc) inline 6, 12 valve OHV turbocharged diesel engine. Bore is 91 mm and stroke is 102 mm, with a compression ratio of 18.6:1. Output is 134 hp (100 kW) at 3500 rpm with 232 lb·ft (315 N·m) of torque at 1,

1HD-FTE specs Engine Code/Name 1HD-FTE Engine capacity (cc) 4164 Engine type Diesel Forced induction system Turbo Engine description 6cyl/SOHC/4v Max Power 122kW @ 3400rpm (on LC70 ute and troopys ) Max Power 151kW @ 3400rpm(on LC100 with intercooler) Torque 380Nm @ 1400rpm (on LC70 ute and troopys Torque 430Nm @ 1800rpm
(on LC100 with intercooler) Number of cylinders 6cyl Configuration In-line Valvetrain SOHC Valves per cylinder 4v Fuel system Direct injection EFI - Fuel type Diesel Bore x Stroke 94.0x100.0mm Compression Ratio 18

no question the 1HD-FTE is a ripper engine but for the cost of the conversion why bother may aswell just buy the 100 series and get one of the worst looking cruisers of all time.

Biggest obstacle would be exhaust on opposite side.

If you are still keen on the idea, then the easiest way to go would be to source a bell housing from a hzj75 cruiser. one end bolts to the 1HZ/1HD-T/FT pattern engine whilst the other end still bolts to the 60/75 series gearbox.
That way it keeps your drive train like tail shafts and also g'box mounts standard.
Will the H55 g'box in the 60 be up to it?? I think so, they seem to do alright behind turbo'd 1HZ ute towing decent sized loads.
Atleast that way, all you need to sort out is the engine mounts exhaust and wiring.
