FJ45: Replace shocks or leaves to fix leaning?

Unread post by linners » December 9th, 2013, 3:42 pm

Hi all,

We've got a 1975 FJ45 ute with a lean to the driver's side. It appears to still have original factory shocks. We use the old girl as our farm ute and often will load her up with 1000L of water on the back. She handles it pretty well, except it's a bit scary when driving across the hill with the driver's side down as there is quite a lean.

Is the lean due to stuffed shocks or leaves (or both :boggle: )???

Thanks in advance.

Only the leaf springs hold the attitude of the vehicle, the shocks do nothing at all except control movement, however, good shocks will tend to limit the sway or roll with a load onboard.
If the shocks aren't doing their job then the amount it sways/rolls may be more than what the spring eventually holds it at.

Eileen need new springs. Probably shocks too if old and are as old as the date of 1975.

Does it lean at the front or back?
Either way swap the leafs for the fornt or back (whicheva leans more) and see if it levels the truck.

But definitly replace the shocks, there not that expensive!

All leaf sprung 'cruisers lean, it's a well known phenomenon. I have a great pre-Intrnet article on the mystery if it. Good shocks make a huge difference to bad road manners. I got real good at hill starts doing much and the same with a 40 series ute loaded with bags of super.

Hi there,

Thanks heaps for the replies. Looks like new shocks are in order and hopefully that'll fix Eileen up. Thanks for the name too. Really made me

I'll let you know how it goes when I've swapped in the new shocks.

Cheers
