Bronco sways & won't drive straight?! Anyone else?

Unread post by performance1989 » November 3rd, 2012, 11:05 pm

I Have a 1985 bronco xlt it is by far my favourite car I have owned yet I have one issue that really is bothering me the bronco sways down the highway and won't stay straight I thought maby the dual shocks either side could be causing it to hit every divot making it choose it's own path down the highway, I would like to hear from other bronco drivers if this is happening to yours as a design flaw or if I have a serious issue with the steering? thanks

Sounds like a steering issue?! Has the vehicle had a suspension lift done on it? Had the Wheel alignment done since or lately? If so, did they check ALL the suspension & steering settings; caster, camber, thrust, etc as well as toe in and out? And do you have wide rims fitted, or even just rims with more negative offset so they stick out further than the OE rims? Any of those can produce the sort of issue you are describing, along with a bunch of other things like oddly or unevenly worn tyres, bent steering gear, a bent front diff/axle housing, and a whole heap more. You should probably take it to a specialist 4WD suspension/steering place to get it checked over, there are even a few places around that specialise in sorting Bronco's & F-trucks, if there's one nearby they may be your best bet! ;)

Good Luck

I went to post and Peter beat me. Lots of good info there.

This is not uncommon. I suppose it is a twin "I" beam axle setup.
It sounds like you have very little or no caster set into the steering angles.
If it has been lifted a bit the caster will have reduced and will be nearly zero.
That will make it wander all over the place.
Get someone to check how much caster you have and it might require bending of the trailing/locating arms which hold each "I" beam to get it right.
A truck aligner will be best as most normal ( if you can call them that) car aligners won't have a clue what to do.

ok thanks for your advice, the bronco doesn't have a lift kit or offset rims and after hearing all the possibility it could be I'm thinking maby true track they deal in truck suspension and 4x4's or tyre plus might have to get them to run over it cause will the caster issue turn into a serious issue or will the car just sway?

It's not so much that the caster can turn into a serious issue, it is more that it is already a serious issue!! If you can notice the swaying and it won't steer straight then it's basically NOT roadworthy as it is and as such it could score a defect, cause an accident, void your insurance, or maybe even something worse!! Truck aligners or specialist 4WD aligners usually know what it takes to sort this sort of thing, and it generally doesn't cost all that much in the overall scheme of things - a replacement car can cost a lot, and it might even be someone else's that you end up having to pay for!
