WJ/WG 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a rattle! Ideas?

Unread post by interact_au » December 12th, 2015, 6:09 pm

Hi , newby here . Just bought a WG Jeep 2002 Grand Cherokee Larado , have a engine noise problem which I thought was the Lash Adjusters ( hydraulic lifters ) so I have replaced them all but noise is still there ( not as bad ) , I now suspect the noise is coming from the Timing Chain area and suspect the chain tensioners , is it difficult to change the tensioners ? and is it OK to just do the tensioners or do I have to change the chains ( 3 off them ) and also the guides ? Alternatively if I can put up with a little bit of noise is it still reliable to drive it like it is OR is it likely to fail quickly . Realy do not want to pour money into the thing if I am whipping a dead horse . Thanks in advance Tony

You sometimes can get away with just the guides but if you are going to all the trouble of stripping down the front of the engine I would fit a new chain & gear set as well. Only use original or Quality brand name aftermarket gears & chain for these motors as the eBay ones can be a bit out & make it a bit#h to get the timing right. A tell tail sign of timming issues is the ASD fuse will keep blowing.

Apart from timing chain slap the only other issue with the 4.7's is the valve seats can become loose & sometimes break in half & fall into the cylinder :petrified: .

I get all my parts from the USA & UK. You will save big time even with postage compared to genuine Jeep parts here.

Yes I did! Built with spanners not chop sticks!
