Unread post by josh8848 » April 30th, 2015, 9:45 am

Gday guys ,

My 2000 Hilux seems the have a rough shutter on the front end when we are out 4x4.

I'm thinking ball joint ??? as they look worn.

and opinion would be great

A bit more info mate. And is it shudder or shutter, and is it when out 4x4ing or when out of 4x4??? Pretty important info there.

Is it when turning, breaking, in 4wd, out of 4wd, hubs locked or unlocked, wheels straight on or turning, when accelerating or decelerating. What about if you jack a wheel up and spin it, does it spin ok??

The more info you give the more accurate someone's help can be.

I used to have a rough shudder when I drove over corrugations :)

It could just be the tyres are too hard (mine were), but you need to give us more info.

Sorry Jimmy , was in hurry this morning when i posted this .

its more noticeable when we are out on dirt tracks in 2 or 4wd. The shudder seems to be on corrugation or bumps and pot holes. just feels like something is worn on the car.

Its happening in straight line , wheels turned , and yes mate the wheels spin fine.

The tyres I'm running are 31 , Yoko geolanders.

Well, it doesn't sound drive line related, so yeah, could be ball joints.

Could also be just tyres too hard. What pressure are they? Maybe let em down a bit and see what happens. I often let my stock skinnys down to about 30 psi on rough dirt roads to lessen the corrugations a bit.

To check your suspension, climb under and use a screwdriver or tyre lever to check all joints / tie rod ends and bushes for movement, but also have a good look for cracked / missing bushes, shocky mounts / sway bar mounts etc and give it all a good grease up.

Also check that its not just a loose bash plate, inner guard or something.

Is it coming through the steering wheel or pedals, or is it just a noise?

Thanks Jimmy ,

I've found the issue , seems to be a combo of ball joints and tie rod ends…
