1988 Hj75 cruiser wont engage 4wd!!

Unread post by Tojo19 » February 10th, 2014, 4:38 pm

Hello again people, wonder if anybody can help me but the other night I had to lend a hand to a couple of mates "pushing to the limit", Anyways they got their ford wedged on a log. As I was attempt to pull them out hubs locked, L4 and the 4wd light on the dash illuminated, there was no drive to the front wheels.

Basically, I've known for while that my hub seals are on the way out but that should affect the drive, I'm thinking its gotta be something in the transfer case not engaging or heaven forbid the diff's rooted, any ideas would be much appreciated.

Thank you
Travis

Is the front tailshaft spinning? - If so its not the transfercase
Pull the locking hubs off and see if the CV is spinning - If not its the locking hubs, if its not spinning then its the CV's (but both sides wont be broken at once) if both sides arnt moving its the diff,

If its the CV's or the diff there is going to be a big noise and lots of clunking.

I suspect one of your hubs is a bit sticky and didn't engage...seen it before. Ether tap it with a spanner or undo the 6 bolts and clean and grease it up. Just be gentle with the bolts as they snap pretty easy if you over tighten em

My Hj75 would slip out of 4wd sometimes but the dash light would still be on.
Just pull the stick back again.
