Unread post by Ln654x4 » May 10th, 2012, 6:13 pm

Hi guys

I have an 85 ln65 hilux with a 2l motor that needs rings replaced(not a big deal)

What do I need to know and what parts do I need to drop in a 3l non turbo? And is it worth it?

I don't want it for a race car lol just a daily, campin rig

Thanks guys

Unread post by DieselNoob » May 10th, 2012, 10:34 pm

Hi Guys after a lot of buggering around of trying to figure out why my 2l was smoking heavy found that the rings gone in 3rd cylinder ( first thing i should of checked)

so now i've come to the conclusion of a 3l conversion, can pick up a motor with 197000km for $1200,is it a Fair price? or should i just grab another 2l?
need someone to shed some light for me, what it takes, can i use the 2l injector pump? and anyone know what little things need to be done, dont want to get half way through it and get stuck

Need to get some knowledge before i jump into it

Im in the same position at the moment, 3l will bolt straight in and from what i've read if its a mechanical engine they wire up the same as the 2l, and sounds like a reasonably easy convers ion

How do you find the turbo on your 2L mate? That may be another option for me. I have a t25 from a Nissan Silvia, just need a manifold and lines.

if you want to stick with the 2.4 track down a 2L-TE out of a surf, you just need a 3L injector pump and then tune it to suit, i have done this and my hilux now beats my mates 80 series turbo diesel. they are a strong little engine, and tuned right they output more power than most realise.

the 3L will bolt straight in, you cant use a 2L injector pump on a 3L as they are a different injection system. it will run but it will sound like a piston is going to come out the top as the injectors bounce with a 2L pump on it, i think the 3L runs higher injection pressure.

Other than that if you get a hold of another 3L complete it will go straight in.

1984 hlux engine conversion ideas

Unread post by DieselNoob » May 15th, 2012, 8:01 pm

hi guys got around $1500 for a motor for the lux, blew the rings in the 2.4 so time for a change, any ideas, looking at a 2.8 conversion, is it worth it? would love to hear about what motor you can put in a hilux, done a little research and most people do the 3.8 v6, but its really expensive,

any advice would be great

any conversion that requires significant modifications and custom work is always going to cost a large sum (10k plus). Personally, if it was me and spending that sort of money, I would rather keep it diesel and put in a 1kz-te from kzn185 hilux or kzn130 surf.

Any of the later L series diesels (2L-T/3L/5L) will go into your truck with minimal modification, as they use the same moounts/gearbox etc..

The 3L/5L's arent in any way a powerhouse, and I dont believe they would be much of an upgrade from the 2L you have now, but they are reliable and respond well to turbocharging if done correctly. The turbo gear from the 2L-TE LN130 surf bolts up with minimal mods.

It might work out more cost effective for you to find a surf that has a good 2L-TE engine thats going cheap and swap out what you need (engine/turbo bits, computer/pump/associated wiriing) and part the rest out to recoupe some of the cost.

Thought I'd do an update of the progress. So my 2l=DEAD was smokin like a biatch when I bought her so I slowly tidied it up. Finally got the engine to the mechanic, was not a good find.

-all pistons were moving easily by hand and were completely shagged
-new timing belt (bonus) out by one tooth so all pistons have valve dents imprinted on them
-oil spline gear was badly worn
-head is cracked and badly pitted on cylinder 4
-water pump mounting surface-corroded

So the verdict is that t 3300 to machine and supply parts with no assembly labour that a 2nd hand motor is the go

Deposit is down on a 3l. Just a bit more balls

Have a look here mate - http://toyotasurf.asn.au/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16585

You should be able to get a 5L in there, but you will need to use the 5L pump as well, and swap the sump I believe.

...and then have a look at my thread in my sig for turboing it with a CT20 (from a Surf). Simple mod, and applies to the 3L also.

The 1KZ-TE mod is a LOT more work however!

The 3l (2.8 liter) is nearly identical to the 2l ( 2.4 liter), its the same motor stroked....there may be some differences in the manafolds....but replacing a 2l with a 3l should be trivial.

With each step you pick up about 7HP in the normally asprated motors on paper....and thats probably worth having.

The furthest easy step you can make is the pre electronic 5l ( 3 liter motor) and that will put you ahead by about 14 hp.....it doesnt seem much but when you start with about 60 its worth having.

Turbo is a seperate issue all together.

You want the whole motor good and going...even fitting a good going injector pump from an identical motor is a fiddle.

Cheers

Gday all.
I'm currently refitting the motor to my brothers 91 Surf. It's a full reco 2lte motor; the problem is that he bought it off ebay after someone else had pulled the motor out and there's one wire under the inlet manifold that I can't find where it goes. So I'm just wondering if someone could have a look at theirs and help me out a bit?? The wire is two brown wires that join to the main loom and has an eye-let conector on it!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers Marty278
