The County's are all getting pretty old now, if you want something reliable that doesn't take a heap of maintenance then the Defender 110 or 130 will be the way to go - altho it is a Landie, so it pays to learn all you can about repairs and maintenance for it anyway! Much cheaper that way in the long run. ;)

What's your budget?? Apart from any impositions that may impose, simply pick a Diesel, the turbo units are nicer to drive, the n/a diesels are slower; but then it's a Landie, it's never going to be an F1 Race car! They work on the Slow and Steady gets you there eventually principal, as well as the supple long travel suspension keeps tyres on the ground instead of relying on LSD's or Lockers principle too, neither of which really makes them all that comfortable at high speed! :D

You mentioned Defender or County in the heading but not County in the post. The County is just an earlier model Defender with different engines - V8 or Isuzu diesel and various geraboxes.

Defenders are only diesel going from the 200tdi early on through the 300tdi, TD5, Puma 2.4 and lately the Puma 2.2.

The Countys were all 110s in wagons and a few utes.

Defenders at various times were 90s, 110s, 120s, 130s in various body configurations and gear boxs.

What would be best touring ute or wagon - well they are basically the same underneath so only you can answer that question - depends what your needs are.

It depends on your budget and your requirements - the lowest price will be a 200tdi with Lt77 5speed, next will be a 300tdi with R380, next will be a TD5 with R380 next will be a 2.4 TCdi with 6 speed manual next will be 2.2 Tcdi and 6 speed manual.

Prices range from about $5000 for a roadworthy 200 Tdi to close to $60K for a current model 2.2.

Depends on budget and need.

Me I would not get any of them because I do not need a commercial vehicle and would go a Discovery - similar engines and gearboxes as well a a V8 petrol and later different engines and gearboxes altogether.

This might shed some light but is not Aust focussed http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_Rover_Defender

The only real way to decide whether or not a Landie is for you is to go out and drive a few of them. Do your research, like you’re doing now. Figure out what model fits your needs, they all have their pluses and minuses and test drive a couple.
They are an acquired taste, they do not suit everyone. Be warned, once your bit, your gone for life.
I personally am a Puma man, 2.4, 6 speed. Love it.

^^What he said. Go drive a few. Personally I drove one and found the driving position terrible. You may like it.

You may need a left arm extension to reach the shift lever then!

The 300Tdi is a development of the 200Tdi and produces just a little more power. Some have said that the 300tdi is not as sweet as the 200tdi but 200tdi parts are becoming harder to find. There is no issue with the 300tdi as long as it is maintained correctly. I believe but don't quote me on it that the Achilles heel on the 300tdi is its timing belt - if neglected if will fail and cause some issues with the head etc. Always change a 300tdi belt early not late.

The 300 tdi had a much longer production run than the 200tdi so there are more of them around. The 300tdi also has the R380 gearbox which is a bit better than the LT77 that the 200tdi had.
