The obvious is one of the 130 Defenders - starting with the 200tdi from the early 90s, to the 300tdi in the mid to late 90s, then the TD5 from the early 2000s (all these have the r380 5 speed box except the 200tdi with had LT77 5 speed.

In the mid 2000s on was the Puma engined 130 with 6 speed manual. Also in the Puma models there is the 110 dual cab.

thanks Gary, so I take it the dual cab is named the 130 then (sorry I am totally new to LR)
I am looking for a rugged Mil Spec vehicle and not at all worried about flash interior as long as it has or can have a rear seat fitted....
SOmeone said they went to India and ford engines as a result..... when did that happen and should I avoid them

Pretty sure 130 and 110 refers to the wheelbase..
you can get dual cab or wagon or single cab in most of the wheelbases I think..

Their website sort of gives the naming.. There used to be an ad couldn't find it but did find this:

Can't really help re the motors though :) Sounds like an interesting project though

As mentioned the model designator is the wheelbase - 90 is 90", 110 is 110" and 130 is 130". All 130s are dual cabs supplied with a rear ute tub - can be replaced with a tray. From about 2007 the 110 could also be purchased as a dual cab ute.

The 200tdi and 300tdi are traditional turbo intercooled 4 cylinder diesels made by Landrover. The TD5 is also a Landrover 5 cylinder diesel - not CRD but all electronic and very much up to enhancing. The Puma 2.4 and recently 2,2 diesels are Ford engines and CRD - Tata in India bought Landrover from Ford a little while back but the Indian connection only relates to ownership.

Defenders hold their value pretty well so prices may range from $5k for a 20yo 200tdi to $55K (maybe a bit more) for a current model 130 Puma 2.2.

Technically the 90 is 92.9" and the 130 is 127" wheelbase :p

Personally I would say the TD5 but that question really is a can of worms.

The TD5 is probably the strongest of all of them, especially the bottom end. None of them like being overheated tho.

I think they are very easy to work on too.

200tdi - economical - parts getting harder to find, especially stuff like heads. no electronics
300tdi - economical, simple, reliable, not very powerful. no electronics
td5 - not quite as economical, more powerful, and can be made a lot more poweful, electronically controlled. very strong engine.
2.4 and 2.2 newest options. Seem ok. Some suffered with vacuum pump failures and so on. 2.2 is getting very complicated with a DPF etc.
