Are Swags to hot for Cape York ??

Unread post by dazmit » July 24th, 2011, 3:08 pm

Hi all

In a recent 4WD mag there was an article on set up for going to Cape York and it mentioned that swags are to hot for sleeping in up there.

We are planning a trip next June / July and was going to swag it.

What do those think who have been there ?

Cheers

We've been using swags up the Cape for the last few decades, and while some types can be hot if you zip them up like a cocoon, we find that those with built in fly screens & ventilation are ideal.

Just don't roll your swag out on that nice dry mud-bank alongside a deep & dark-watered pool or lagoon, no matter how far you are from the coast! ;)

Not too hot... however you don't have to be the quickest runner, just the 2nd slowest - LOL

p.s. roof top or up of the ground somehow is best.

Not having been there yet but on the cards, if sleeping on the ground ensure plenty of trip flares, artillery and claymores...nasty snapping handbags

My son slept in a swag on our trip up there last year, and I didn't hear any complaints about being too hot. Just make sure you have a swag that can open up, but still be covered by insect screen, if that makes sense.

Camp in sensible spots and you won't have any problems with snapping handbags. You don't usually see many up there, much to everyones popular belief. Only place my son got worried about the crocs would you believe, was in the caravan park at Seisia where we were camped just off the sandy beach.

im still on my way back from the cape was in a tent with a light sleeping bag and slept fine but it was very windy when we were up there but i think a swag that opens up would b fine to get teh air circulation would b fine.

We spent a few weeks at Cape York last year , just use common sense and Crocs wont be a problem .
A swag would be hot for me but thats me .

In the Rooftop Tent we seemed to catch any cool breeze that was around
make sure you go have a look at Muttee Head and the Mouth of the Jardine

Dome swag, head vent open, top open, sitting on a stretcher.

Stretcher gets you off the ground where all the little nasty's are. I've been setting up like that for the past few years and find it excellent. Just gotta find a stretcher roughly the same size as your swag.

Good Luck mate.

I dont think Cape York is quite as hot as the East Kimberley, and i've slept in nothing but a swag my entire life up here. I would never say they are too hot.

Its the mosquito net that makes it hot. I dont use one of those dome swag, just the normal swag, and if need be a mozzie net strung over the top and tucked underneath. If no mozzies, then net isnt needed.

Never had a problem with handbags either, i either sleep on the tray of the ute if camping right alongside the water or we camp were the banks are too steep to get up. Or i sleep with the rifle.

One of my brothers mates sleeps in a swag when they go up the gulf, but he insists on sleeping on the roof rack.

serioulsy the reason you carry a sawg is the ability to change your bedding according to the weather....

cheers
