Post copyrighted material and YOU WILL BE BANNED!

I've just gone through the GPS section and deleted multiple threads containing links to download maps for various mapping software, as well as a major thread where people were sending illegal copies of discs containing mapping software to each other.

To say that the sheer number of people participating in these threads is disappointing is an understatement. Appalling is more like it. Companies like OziExplorer invest tens of thousands of dollars into producing quality electronic maps, and I am sure you would all be the first to complain when they shut their doors from lack of revenue. These companies directly invest in the Australian 4WD industry, and you're stealing from them.

If ANYONE posts ANY copyright material on the Forum anywhere, including links to torrents or websites, or uses the Forum/PM's to disseminate copyright material, including maps & workshop manuals etc, they will be removed from the forum immediately and their details IP address will be given to the copyright owners who I assume will prosecute them to the full extent of the law.

No more warnings, no notice, nothing.

What about home made scanned maps brendan , do they also fall into this catergory.....
Just curious because in some cases its the only way to get certain maps at the scale you want.....
I'd much rather pay for them myself, but sometimes is impossible to get "paid for" versions.......

Let's just err on the side of caution here and say no. Paper maps are still subject to copyright and technically even if you photocopy the map (or a manual) to give to a mate you're breaking copyright. We can't stop people doing this off-site but we can prevent the 4WD Action forums from becoming the medium for it.

Fair enough mate, I just wanted to get it clarified.
Maybe you guys should get a 4wd Action version of the maps done, even a section at a time and put it in the mag as a subscription giveaway, or a tag on the end of the DVD.....1 Map per DVD or something to build a complete set after time.......maybe even with waypoints to interesting area's.
A lot of people find the maps really useful, and I must say they are not really that expensive.....

Cheers mate !

Brendan, I think you'll find the NSW and VIC maps were produced from the guys over at GPSaustralia.net , and were compiled from free data sources. The maps are available from over there aswell. A lot of people put work into these free maps.

QLD maps are not available the same way because there is no free data available, therefore they cannot be produced.

then the safest way to access them is from that website. The issue of copyright is a touchy subject and as this is a forum provided by a commercial entity can open the way for legal ramifications if people are infringing on copyrighted material.

Fixa, fair enough mate, but as Grimbo said the safest way is to access them over there. All I know is we've been contacted directly by a number of companies asking why we're letting copyright infringements occur and advising we need to do something about it otherwise legal action will be taken.

Look at it like us covering both our and your butts.

Good idea removing the posts, but just to point out unless you are hosting/seeding the torrent or the one distributing it the posters on the forum cant be sued/prosecuted/charged with anything at all

Asides form the moral discussion... Brendan and this forum represents a company that has real assetts that copyright holders can pursue for damages it can be argued they are facilitating breaches (as compared to some poor dude who might own his truck and a rent a house). He can't afford to ignore it. This forum isn't worth the potential penalty (and we'll all be worse off for it).

If you can't afford proprietary software offerings, try support some of the open/free ones. With more interest, they'll eventually be better. Compared with what we used to pay, OziExplorer is damn cheap.

The Topo250k maps are a pittance compared to what we used to have to pay for them for work and only a fraction of what they actually cost to create.

There's plenty of free tracks available, and if there's not, get in your truck and make them so you can swap them with your mates. A damn fine excuse to go bush if I ever heard. :o)

And if you still can't afford it. Wait for Google. Their publishing of map data has turned the industry completely on its head.
