So, I've been reading this post every spare chance I get over the past week and all I can say is wow! Dave, the knowledge you posses and the workmanship you have demonstrated here is simply astounding! Keep up the great work!

P.s. pretty happy that I'll get to see this project finish!

Been a while so thought I'd check in and see what's happened. Looks like things are still in limbo. Maintain the rage Dave.

So much work and so many great components just waiting to be enlivened. A great chassis, axles, engine, etc etc. Fire it up and enjoy!

Yeah yeah... so it's been a while.... Life just gets in the way sometimes.

So I've finally put things aside (which are now accumulating) and put some time into this again. Where we left off many months ago I was up to fabricating a box to install the winch into. Turns out to be relatively complicated and has taken me nearly two weeks to get it right. Made of the last of the 4mm plate the chassis was made from. Got it to the point the lid fits like a biscuit tin though.

Waiting on a 50mm rotabroach cutter to cut the holes through the chassis for the pink bits to hook onto.

Also about to start work on the front bar wings. It is within these that the batteries will be mounted. Down low an away from any heat. I've actually come up with a great design for the primary electrics. Got to procure the components yet, shame the exchange rate is crap now though. I'll fill you in on the details as it progresses.
Cheers, Dave.

Great to see you back at it Dave as worried it was never going to get going again. Last post with photos with the winch mods was May 2013! Sure has been 'many months'.
Cheers, Marcus

So big rotabroach cutter arrived. Have to highly recommend Tradetools, not only have them but good prices and still good quality. More than can be said for the other places I tried.

Cut the big holes and tacked in the anchor stubs that the winch connects to.

Even taper turned the outer ends to reduce the weight a bit.

And with the winch box in position.
I'll make some little stud mounted spring loaded tabs that will keep the pink bits engaged over the stubs.
Cheers, Dave.

What's the idea behind housing the winch in a box as oppose to simply placing on a spanning beam between the chassis supports? Have you done so for reducing the weight and maintaining the strength?

Fair question. In it's box like this I can pull it out and connect it on to the rear of the chassis or even use some chains to secure it almost sideways. Just greater versatility really.
Cheers, Dave.

Forgot to mention, I finally got myself a good sheet-metal guillotine last year. Will certainly get used for things like front bar, fuel tank, water tank/s, tray, toolboxes and battery boxes. Nothing like having the right tool for the job. ;)
