Justian's Volvo C303 build

Unread post by Justian5678 » February 16th, 2015, 11:31 am

Thought it was about time I started a page on the re build on a Volvo C303, that I brought about six months ago. the truck was in reasonable condition considering it is a 1974 model, it runs and drives although it does need work on the brakes and suspension. Below is a picture of the truck coming home on the tilt tray

The first thing was to do a suspension upgrade as it had been used to carry large tanks and had far to heavy springs under it, so had springs reset and had a couple of the leaves removed. The rear diff has torsion bars to help stop axle twist these had been bent so needed to remove them to straighten them, but bolts had rusted into bushes which are rubber with a steel centre. So after cutting them out with a angle grinder burning the bushes out it was time to straighten then weld in some extra reinforcing to help keep them straight in the future

Hey mate, what a great thread this will be. I like your truck but I have to admit that I have no idea what your truck is and what it's purpose was.

Cheers

Yes that is what I would love my Volvo C303 to look like, the one in photo, at the moment I just want to get it on the road have to get brake parts back in and get my diffs back from shop where they have had them since Christmas. Yes mine is also only a 4WD and not a 6WD would love 6WD but just way to hard to come by in Australia

Got the brake parts back from getting them fitted with stainless sleeves, new linings, drums machined and new brake hoses as the rubber one had got brittle and cracked

Had been putting of posting about the problems I have been having with my diffs in the hope that the Diff shop would have fixed the problem by now. They have had my diffs since the start of December and finally got the front one back the other day. As you can imagine these diffs come out of a 4 tonne rated truck and are very heavy and difficult to handle in and out from under the truck. After lifting the diff out of the trailer getting it under the truck and bolted up on the springs went to put all the brake parts on the passenger side when I found the rubber boot that is meant to seal the swivel housing and keep dirt out and oil in was not put in place correctly as you can see in the photo, these guys said they would come straight out and fix it as trying to get the diff out would be to hard, I thought great old fashion service as it should be. Well the offer of dropping off my second diff and fixing the mistake they made on the first diffs is more than likely not going to happen as that was nearly a week ago and am still waiting not even a phone call and after paying $2200 to get this one diff done for them to turn up. Well guess I will just have to wait and see what happens ????????????????????????? ( Guess you are wondering who Repaired the diffs well lets just see what happens first)

Volvo built these for the Swedish Army mainly, although a few European countries as well as Malaysia used them for military vehicles. Not sure on exact numbers but they brought some in for the Australian Army to trial but they went with Landrovers and they sold them to the general public, but understand were quite expensive in the day.
