Re: HJ47 - Landcruiser Ute - Budget Rebuild
Sorry, I have been away lots.
I have sorted most of the parts that I need, but I still dont have them in my possession.
I will be putting the GB and TC on and then looking at the driveshafts.
Then onto the bodywork.

Re: HJ47 - Landcruiser Ute - Budget Rebuild
So I have 4 weeks holiday and I plan on spending a few of them on the truck.
I have all the parts I have been waiting for and I will be picking up a spare vehicle for parts on Thursday (which I will strip down and well the chassis and leftovers)
I also started to pull apart the Warn highmount winch that I will be mounting on the front bar, I odered the steel to modify the bullbar and the few parts I will need for the winch.
Photos and updates to follow

hey mate,
Good to hear it is coming along. I might be interested in the chassis of the donor vehicle if you are in melbourne.

So the winch is going great! except.... I destroyed one of the bolts to the motor.

I am trying to pull the bushes out and clean it all up before it goes back together.

I will get some photos of the winch re-build and the casing which is comming up great, Im just waiting on a couple of bits.

I also picked up my parts truck. Trouble is the girlfriend will kill me if she sees it, so Im going to spend friday, sat and sun stripping down the parts vehicle and sell the chassis and leftover bits.

Was in interesting trip home

But it has the interiour bits I needed

And some bits from under the bonnet that I will steel and clean up

A couple of usefull panels

Also picked up a heap of spare parts from the same bloke, All up it cost me $200 - What a legend
Complete Head, gaskets and rockers
Flywheel,
3x clutches
Swivel hub kit
Transfercase gasket kit
Old injectors,
Glowplugs
2 alternators
1 starter moter - which I need!
And a heap of other bits and pieces.

Primed the winch up

Looks like it was made on the 5th working day, Feb 1988

The solonoid pack might need some work though.

Looks like it might be time for a new solenoid pack?! Or maybe a replacement solid state unit?
Always handy finding a spare donor vehicle, but never easy working out what to keep & what to let go..... you know the moment you get rid of the remnants, something's gonna happen that you coulda fixed with that bit you just sold on the wreck!!
But I think you'll be safe tossing that solenoid pack!!

Yeah peter, I tested the solinoids and 1 of 4 were working and that was a bit dodgy, I took the plunge and bought a cheap solid state solinoid, but Im going to pack it under the warn solinoid holder and water proof the crap out of it, so hopefully I can get the best of both worlds.
I also have plans for an underdash cupholder that will also hold some of those ARB switches, and the warn will be controlled from there, lets see how I go because Im not confident.

Re: HJ47 - Landcruiser Ute - Budget Rebuild
Well I had a kinds good and kinda bad day. and Im not going to be getting anything more done untill Tusday . . . . so much for a relaxing holiday working on my car.
First the good!
Well I got most of the spare parts ute stripped.

I will steel the tub and swap it out for my origional one (that gives me taco, and complete dash) and then pick and mix for the best panels.
Then I will put the remaining parts together, and try to sell a fairly complete truck, it would make a good project allowing someone to put any engine they want in it.
And now the failure, I put back together the winch today, and totally stuffed it up, I put the main gear in backwards, so when I was pressing the brake shaft in it pushed to far and popped the needle bearings out the other side, so now I need to pull it all apart and start again, which will cost me another afternoon and some more grease.

Re: HJ47 - Landcruiser Ute - Budget Rebuild
Ok so I got distracted again by making something for the daily driver. It will go on the ute when its on the road.
What do these three make?

I am sick of spilling coffee on myself so I made this.

Most of the switches will not be setup on the troopy (waiting to go on the ute) but I will be putting the warn and some driving lights on the troopy over the next few days, so I will setup the cab controls for the winch. It sgoing under the dash where there is allready some empty captive nuts - Only an option because I have no heater.

Re: HJ47 - Landcruiser Ute - Budget Rebuild
So I have been away for a bit, and havnt really gotten anyhting done, but I have picked the best parts of the 2 utes so now I can start to think about how its going to get together.
I still have the 5speed to go in (and thats whats stopping it from being moved from its current spot)

The ute tray is on, but Still has alot of welding to get it right, (design is for a curved headboard for the front and then a bar of the same curve on the rear of the tray, so I need to cut and shut the sides.

Starting on the cab - Mostly just needs a cleanup and then start to paint. Im going to hit it with a heated gearny and then wire brush the crap out of it.

The cab is great except for a couple of dints and this little fatigue spot which needs welding.

Awesome thread and build. Thanks for sharing. My girlfriend wants me to keep our Navara fairly standard, clean and nice so I'm looking to start something like this to be my off-road monster.
Cheers, for the inspiration.
