Scrumpyoh's '79 FJ45 Troopy - Toyotasaurus

Unread post by scrumpyoh » September 4th, 2012, 10:18 pm

My Project is a '79 FJ45 Troopcarrier, of which I am turning into a 4 seater Bikini top. Some will hate it, I love the idea so...

Plan is to take the back off (Done), get a cage made up or roll bars, or whatever works, Obviously fix up any rust holes etc., paint the outside with 464 Landcruiser Beige, and have Beige Raptor Liner through the tub and interior. so I can hose it out. Originally bought this truck from a bloke in Caboolture. I had missed out on a HJ Troopy the week earlier, so I wasnt going to miss my chance for an FJ. I have a BJ42 and absolutely love these trucks. I will be keeping the 2F engine in it. it still runs well and has extractors.

This first post will be picture heavy :D (all this is pretty much straight copied from my Outerlimits thread)

Here he is when i bought it. 1st pic is where it sits at my mum and dads place

The Idea. Found this pic on the net a long time ago and know nothing of the build. it will be similar to this, but not part for part, spec for spec

Will be making a drop down tailgate for it, using the old lower barn door hinges. Picked up a GQ rear 2 seater from Twisty to be situated in the back at some point.

If there any questions or if you want some parts, comment in here, or PM me and I'll see what I can do

Finished the Rear Sill and stanchions, just need to get some panel in there to fix the gap. Took the Doors off so they are out of the way. started to weld the body to the rear sill stanchions right at the rear. more pics tomorrow for hopefully completed welding, and then onto panel repair. Slow mover, but will get there eventually

Pic of the stanchions since they were welded. capped the 50mm. also repaired one rust spot above the rear left wheel. will continue repairing those spots, and recreating the panels for the rear corners

cut some rear quarters out of this cruiser i got for a bottle of JD, and welded them in. managed to cut them so where the wheel arch was in them, is around the centre of it, thus providing some extra strength to the panel. once it's ready, they will be minimally bogged etc. to get them level.

***The following was done today - 4th of Sept, 2012***

Almost finished the rear sill area. Replaced the rusted out compartment on the driver's side, with matching steel. Should be almost completely finished with the rear section after tomorrow

Fixed the corners near the stanchions, as they were rusty. managed to re use some old corners/rails from the JD cruiser panels. and also managed to fill in/weld all the pop rivet holes in the wheel arches that the PO made :irked:

Managed to take off the windscreen and guards. The windscreen has a rust hole on the right hand corner, where the it bolts back to the firewall, and also the nuts had broken off the inside of the chassis rail on the drivers side where the top 2 of 4 bolts are, that hold the guard on. such a pain in the ass to poke a spanner in there to undo. will weld some back on later on :/

So i've repaired the passenger guard, just have to beat out some dints, and make it look almost level and straight. will fix the drivers side tomorrow, and coat them both in some epoxy primer. hopefully it comes out half decent :D

just a pic of everything off. more progress soon.
