Bombardier
That’s not a bad idea mate, I am fairly confident its all sealed up good but I did put a piece of shade cloth over the top of the snorkel pipe before I pushed on the last bend at the top to catch any larger debris, Will remember the stocking idea though in case I have probs later on down the track.

TURBO HILUX
LOL I was seriously thinking about doing a white stormtrooper helmet instead of wording as a hat tip to the Yoda reference….still think that would have looked good!

THE RIG
Nice one mate, it was out on Friday for a bit of mud over Curra way, still fairly new round these parts as so often overseas, so just finding the best spots locally to go for a run, fair bit around here though!

And yes…stands out…..maybe a bit too much…. ;) ah well…. How’d it sound? Difficult to know how loud it is from inside the cab…

Coco7
Yeah most of what you can see is the springs, ubolts, steering arms etc which have a fair bit of surface rust, from the last Fraser trip I recon. Not to bummed about it though as the next part of the plan is to get into the suspension etc so the diffs will be coming out, IFS hubs on, new springs etc etc so I will deal with it all then.

Toyholden
Mate go for it, look forward to the pics!

Thanks for the comments guys it’s good to get feedback :)

Cheers, good to hear it doesn't sound over the top!

Has anyone done a 'Frombe' or 'From behind steering' setup on a Hilux/4runner?

Found this,

http://www.4x4labs.com/products/steerin ... ng-system/

and looks interesting, emailed Luke at 4x4labs, he came straight back and confirmed they have RHD arms in stock for US$300 + shipping....

Anyone got any thoughts or experience on these?

that's the go!
my 80series front diff is like this, having the tie-rod behind rather then out front makes good sense... why would they even bother trying to fit them on the front of any 4x4...?
i'm just gonna need a new draglink or somehow shorten the 80series one along with the panhard so it fits under the Surf lol!

Luke reckons $60 in postage... hmm I think your right...thats the way I will go!

Not much doing here..... picked up an ifs wreck for $200 (No motor, gear or brakes).... happy with that as so far I can use a load of good stuff but also its all the little crappy bits I have replaced that were missing or broken on Piggy....so far pulled...

2x H4 front lamps.
2x Rear Springs for rears up front.
2x Front ifs Hubs for widening.
1x Rear diff etc to match new front width.
1x Front left wiring harness for side light.
1x Bonnet rest rubber.
1x Heater pipe on/off valve mech, and cable.
1x IFS steering box.
1x Wiper motor.

It also came with an alloy bull bar and Gas tank + Lines I don't want as well as a swing away tire carrier I am trying to decide what to do with.

Image

Other than that I finally wired in the top light using a watertight gland through the roof.

Thanks, will prob get a Toyota logo on the cover, or something...

Just managed to get the rear off the donor and under cover before the rain started today, so was able to spend some time stripping it back.

Toyholden, this is why I asked on yours what thickness bash guard you were going for as thats my next part, mocking up and making a bash plate etc for the rear housing while its all off...

Hahaha...
There are so many different ways to make your bash plate lol!
When time comes to do mine I will be shaving the bottom off the pumpkin housing & whacking a piece of 6mm plate in there & using the edge off it to build the remainder of the bash plate off... Sorry it's all in my head

But yes I reckon the back diff needs it.. You can judge where the front centre is but the back centre has a mind of its own & goes where it wants so that extra strength is worth it... I will work out how i'm gonna do mine when I get that far... The 80series rear diff has a bigger centre so it sits closer to the ground then a hilux diff centre so I will be trying to shave as much off as I can without fouling on crown wheel...

Anyways your stripping that thing quick :)

Bit more done on the rear Diff housing today,

Removed the two bottom pins so i can use as bolts for oil drain holes,

Tried double nutting them but no way were they going to come off..

Image

So welded the bolts on in about the spots they wil need to be anyway and then unbolted

Image

Plan is to have a go at the drain hole at the bottom and smooth it all out

Image

Fair bit of grinding later and the plug pops out..

Image

Then grind and flappy disk back to smooth.

Image

Nex part is filling the hole!

Mocked up a template for the diff brace

Image

And got it on to paper to work out how best to cut the steel up

Been slowly getting ready to do the Hubs and Springs (Rear Up Front) in one go. So thought I would test fit the spring pack I have been working on.

Before I started..

Image

Went to jack it up at the front and realised there is no High Lift mounting point... Duh! Good job I worked this out at home not out somewhere and in need of lifting the front!..

So first job turned out to be cutting a mount point!

Image

Worked good!

Image

Un bolted all the bits on the front axle so i could move it freely and pulled out the front springs

Bottom spring below is the spring pack i pulled off. Top spring below is a mix...top three leaves are the top three off the rear of an 86 Hilux (I think) and the bottom three leaves are the top three leaves of the rear of a Holden Rodeo (again... I think) with the mounts cut off. I need to shorten them a bit to stagger a bit better but wanted to get them on for a test fit before stripping, sanding and painting them.

Image

Spring centre Bolt is 6 cm further forward..

Image

Was a pain to get back in as had to shuffle and move everything and the shackle has pretty much seized so I am only able to move it with a hammer! Got there in the end though...

Moves the Dif forward 10cm and has lifted it up from the crappy inverted springs that were on there by 10 cm.

Image

Now to pull it apart again and start cleaning it all up while I wait for steering parts to come....
