welder suddenly playing up - welding intermittently. Ideas?

Unread post by skik » December 3rd, 2016, 4:35 pm

hi guys i have a CIG weldskill 135 up until today had served me faithfully but today it is welding intermittently i checked the hand piece all good there i took the side cover off to expose all the inner workings when you pull trigger you can hear a relay on the circuit board clicking on and off as it stutters it will do this even with the wire feed disengaged would this relay be the problem or is there something else i am missing
thanks
Michael

Hey mate
Couple questions;
1. How long since you last used the welder?
2. Did you leave the wire in the welder for any length of time?
3. When you pull the trigger, do the feed roller work?
4. How old is the liner?
%. Is the liner pushed hard up behind the tip?
6. What is the condition of the tip?
7. Has the wire got any rust or corrosion on it?
8. If your using gasless wire you should be using nurled rollers
9. Check the wire hasn't split or recoiled back on the spool and gotten caught under the top layer

I'll check back later and what you tell me I may be able to point you in the rite direction

cheers

1. probly a couple of months since last use
2. the wire has been in the welder for about 12 months
3&4. the welder is about 3 years old liner never changed still on 2nd 5kg roll
5. liner is not hard against tip
6. the tip and liner are both running freely
7. haven't had a close look but doesn't appear to have any corrosion
8. gas-less with knurled rollers
9. the wire is lose on spool but still coming off cleanly

i took more notice today of how it was operating it worked fine on one weld then stuttery on the next but it was definately the welder stopping and starting a fey times when starting a weld i would pull the trigger and nothing would happen for a few seconds i have released the feed rollers and it still does the same thing when it plays up you can hear a relay on the circuit board clicking on and off it makes no difference if you are welding or not or if the rollers are engaged i have pulled apart the gun and checked the switch and lead wires with a multi meter and it all checks out fine and changing amp and wire speed settings makes no
difference

Take the welding tip off MIG gun and spray WD40 down the liner, then slowly pull the mig wire out by winding out back onto the spool. If the liner is dirty or stuffed, you'll feel it as you pull wire out.

Mate, welders can be fickle and everything has to be clean and perfect to work well.
If you spray WD40 down the liner it will cause porosity in your welds.
Try blowing the liner out with air to remove any fine metal filings.

Hope this gets you going

thanks Scantek i wouldnt have sprayed wd 40 down the liner i persevered and it seemed to sort itself out could have been dirty wire as suggested in previous coment although the wire did seem clean and shiny may have been enough to cause problems
