Got or want bigger tyres? Come in here!

Unread post by Nemesis » September 12th, 2014, 4:38 pm

Originally started as a research topic years ago in the older utes sections, the tyre topics are so popular it's time to start an new info archive in each sub section, not just for the older ute people!

What we want is a collective tried and tested database of info on what works for your model fourby. No hearsay!

So, if you have upgraded your tyre size, let us know what had to be done and whether there is any or no scrubbing. What year/model, how much suspension lift, body lift, wheel off set, guard cutting/massaging, gear changes etc? You get the drift.

Fire away and feel free to post supporting pictures!

285/70R17 on a 17x9" +18 rim

Stock height: Slight scrub at full lock/full compression. Nothing major.

2" Lift: Perfect, like it was made for it.

I've got Mickey Thompson P3's on my Bt50, 285.70.17 (33's). I have a 2" tough dog lift. All fits perfect. Before the P3's I had MTZs in the same size. I got those before the 2" lift and they fit no problems, no scrubbing
Always itchin' for the next big trip .......

i would like to fit 285x70R17 but am wondering what people do with the spare tyre. i cannot see how it would fit underneath unless i replace the towbar with an aftermarket rear bar with a swing away wheel carrier. feedback on what others have done wold be great.

advice on what size tyres to fit

Unread post by Dazandyue » January 4th, 2015, 12:53 pm

hi guys, I'm just after some thoughts from others about what larger size tyres to fit to my 2013 BT50. I was thinking of 285x70R17 mainly because the extra diff clearance it provides but below is a few concerns I have and any thoughts from others would be appreciated.

- I run the mazda boss adventure alloy rims which are 8" wide with a different offset to the standard and even my standard 265x65R17 tyres stick out about 15mm from the guards so 285'swould stick out even further. I would imagine it would be pretty noticeable from a police vehicle travelling behind me but not sure if they would even care about this, the tyre diameter is bigger than the 50mm allowed limit in vic anyway but I highly doubt anyone would pic up on that.

-because I have the different allow rims 8" wide, the spare I would imagine would be a 7" steel rim, so I think I would need another spare rim to fit a 285 tyre too.

-The spare wont fit underneath the vehicle as its too large so its a good excuse to grab a rear bar, thinking the TJM bar as it appears like it has the best rear angle clearance. Kaymar would be great but they are a complete rip off and the MCC rear bar with swing away's doesn't have any side protection but it would be great to have the version with the twin jerry cans on the rear.

-I am concerned on how noticeable the larger tyres will make on the power. Have others fitted 285's and noticed a massive loss in power and regretted it?

The simplest option is to fit 265x70R17 tyres but they aren't really that much bigger than standard so in my opinion it wont really make much of an advantage offroad. I'm just not sure which way to go, its a pity they don't make good muddies in 275x70R17 tyres as that would be a great compromise. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hey dudes.

I just got a set of 285/70R17 for my XTR MY2014. No lift YET and they fill the arch well. No rubbing anywhere.

Just wondering if anyone is running 35's, on the new ranger

- what suspension are you running?
- is there enough power?
- what offset rims are you running?

Cheers

My '12 GT is running 285/70/17's.
There's a small amount of rubbing on the inside at full lock, it's running up agaisnt some sodt plastic.

No lift.
Not sure how it was prior as I bought it with them on.
@ Mal: I'm guessin the 2014 must be a little different in the wheel arches as mine do rub.
I work for my weekends... and damn it, I WILL enjoy them

Cool, it'll be interesting to see.
Hopefully I'll be able to get my wheel alignment and balance done this week, may resolve it.
the rubbing isn't doing any harm so its more an annoyance factor

Sorry for the delay... computer trouble.

With my 285/70R17 at full lock both ways I've got about 30 to 35mm clearance. So no problem there and that's no lift either.

Hmm, well I still haven't got my wheel alignment work done, so I'll wait out.
Whats your offset?
