I haven't, but I saw a Malcolm Douglas episode where he cooked a pav in the bush. Might be worth checking out

Of course it can be done..havn't done it myself though.

A little cheating might be helpfull.........like a thermocouple, like comes with cheap multimeters droped onto the oven to monitor temperature......a noncontact thermometer wont be as accurate but it would still be a nice cheat.

Half the problem with a pav is getting the mix right...but if you cheat and you use "the egg" from the supermarket that should be OK.

I realy don't see it as a problem as long as you don't overheat it....ya more or less just dry out a pav.

NOW if you realy want a chalenge....try a neurotic pudding, like a suffle.....pull a good one of those out of a camp oven and you will demand respect.....Oh yeh..oh yeh

cheers

Yep done it!
not my best pav but the trick is to heat up the camp over to about 140 the take it off the coals completely. place pav inside then about 30 mins after that place on egde of coals for 15 mins then take back off to finish cooking about 15 more mins. Then take lid half off to cool for about an hour.
Cheers Leah & Matt

Usefull information there.

of course if you are putting an camp oven on the edge of the coals, its worthwhile turning it every now and then so it stays evenly heated.

cheers

Well there you go, I would have said no the pav would collapse as you'd struggle to keep the temperature constant enough and pav is quite sensitive to heat fluctuations.....but if leah-matt have cone it then obviously it can be done

Anything is possible. Combination of time, money and will; Any two of those tend to be enough!

I look forward to you telling us all how, it'll make it that little bit easier to get my lovely sem-city-slicker wife to join me :-)

Trouble with making a pav in the bush is beating the egg whites til stiff, but maybe that wouldn't be an issue for you men of brawn.

Here's a simple no-fail pav recipe for you: put in a mixing bowl 2 egg whites, 1 cup sugar, 1 tsp each vinegar, cornflower & vanilla essence, 1 tablespoon of boiling water. Beat until still peaks appear, cook in a preheated oven at 180C for about 3/4hr til slightly browned. Turn off oven & leave inside til cooled. Easy peasy, works everytime, you just need to adjust it for a camp oven now. If I want to make one bigger I double the mixture & extend the cooking time a little.
