Tetanus - 96 Hilux with a 3UZ-FE V8 Build

Unread post by jgrov2 » December 29th, 2015, 6:20 pm

Started out as a 1996 Dual Cab toyota hilux, LN106R with 2.8L diesel and solid axles front and rear. When I bought it, it had 320,000 on the clock, 3 inch lift which had sagged to 2 inch lift, 31 inch tyres which were completely screwed, and a snorkel. Its a style side and what I realised later was that the tray was off a later model and didnt quite fit so they used angle iron to mount it which is less than ideal. It also had an alloy front bumper, lightforce spotties and an old 20 channel uhf.

My original plans were to put 33s on it and turbo the diesel.

A week later I decided there wasnt any point in polishing a turd because its still a piece of ***** and decided to buy a 3UZ-FE 4.3L V8 petrol from a japanese celsior imported by a shop in sydney.

The half cut than sat in my garage for a whole year while I stuffed around leaving the army and starting uni studying mechanical engineering so I didnt have a lot of spare time on my hands. I also ended up moving house and having to move everything over to the new garage which was a nightmare. First time camping was awesome in the old girl up at bribie island, she just ploughed through the sand and even managed to pull a bogged pathfinder out. Second time we went up to double island point on long weekend and ended up waiting 3 hours in 40 degree heat for the barge on our return. While we were waiting smoke started emanating from under the bonnet and I realised the bearings on some of the pulleys and idlers had burned out so we managed to limp home.

I took her off the road and ripped out the diffs and put in detroit diff lockers front and rear. Man what a difference they made, we took it up for a sneaky try up landcruiser park and it crawled up everything first go was impressive, out drove the fj and cruiser that was with us.

So now Ive started the transplant in ernous and so far I have pulled the engine and just about everything else in the engine bay.
Bought a R150F gearbox from a turbo surf, mated it up to my gear driven transfer case with marlin crawler and trail gear plates and shafts etc
Completely serviced the V8 including all belts, gaskets, seals, bearings and idlers and water pump.
Sorted out the harness so we have exactly what we need in regards to the ecus and wires.
Installed electric fuel pump into the old diesel tank.
Rebuilt the rear drum brakes with new drums and shoes.
Rebuilt the front calipers with new seals pads and rotors.

This week Im hoping to finish small ancillary things like handbrake mod and starter motor wiring so I can drop her in.

Ill upload pictures as soon as I can.

kept the rear the same because their fucking useless anyway but Im running Forza FP3 Pads up front with DBA 4000 Series T3 Slotted Rotors. Ill be putting in a 1 inch bore master cylinder to keep the pedal travel down. I redid the rears with RDA drums and shoes. Will be an upgrade over what I had because 2 pistons on each side had seized so bad into the caliper i had to replace them and the seals were nearly non-existent. Also swapped over to HEL braided and extended brake lines as the stock ones were rooted and starting to get stretched. Most of the hard lines around the calipers broke as well lol.

Does your LN 169R have the 25 mm X 297mm rotor then?, The catalogue only lists DBA 4000 Series T3 Slotted Rotors in that size, where as your model usually has 291mm diameter rotors. Im looking to upgrade the brakes on my RZN169R, so I've ben studying the brake catalogues to see what I can mix & match for mine

mines an LN106R and i believe the 291mm extends to 95 model then they moved to 302mm rotor but I could be wrong.

let us know how you go with that, finding the discs is the easy part. . . finding the right callipers to match the disc sizes is tricky.

Im not sure what you mean? The 305mm rotors are stock on my ute and the calipers fit it perfectly. Ive got the four piston S12W calipers up front

Ok, this is some info I have on this
most LN series
S12W cast into caliper,
43mm pistons,
rebuild kit 04479-35010, hilux
rotors DBA 780 289mm 20mm wide
pads DB1149

KZN:

S13WB cast into caliper,
45mm pistons,
rebuild kit 04479-60020, same as 80 series, V6 fourunner T100.
rotors DBA 775 291mm x 25mm
pads DB1346

According to DBA catalogue, the 302mm rotor is only 20mm thick.

Im struggling to find half decent master cylinder. Im looking for 1 inch bore from fj80 models apparently bolts straight up but im confused about the residual valvimg. I cant find it on my hilux or in the master cylinder. I know most of the fj80 ones I see on ebay dont specify if the valving is for disc front n rear or disc front drums rear. Also most of the fj80 ones are generic ***** like pbr etc. The only half decent one I can find is from locktup but they asking $250 which feels a bit steep. Not sure if im just being a tight ass.

Bit of an update

Finished putting an electric walbro 255lph fuel pump onto the old fuel pickup. Also used these trick little bulk head fittings from EFI hardware, honestly I couldn't believe their customer service really great shop hard to come by these days.

Also managed today with great difficulty I might add that the engine and gearbox were dropped in and bolted up everything fits into the stock positions and only some slight massaging of the firewall. We dropped the motor in first then tilted her back and lifted the gearbox and transfer case up from underneath. Everything looks hunky dory except the power steering pump fouls on the power steering box. There is also no way the stock headers will fit mostly due to the enormous triangle flange that fouls on the chassis rail and I think the front most pipe will also foul on the steering shaft. Ill do some research tonight about what to do with the power steering and trying to find some headers to fit. Im thinking maybe the IFS steering box would fit better and allow me to convert to highsteer or crossover steering. Either that or relocating the power steering pump or swapping it out for the hydro assist pump and mounting it somewhere more friendly.
