My 1973 fj45! UPDATE!

Unread post by claytone » February 22nd, 2013, 10:08 pm

Well here guys is my much loved! project! i bought it of my uncle who bought it brand new in 73! and it's been their farm vehicle for the past 40 years! doing alot of work pulling loads it was never designed to to or carry! he told me they used to stick 3 ton on the tray! no wonder why the chassis had cracks in it! it was in very good condition! it drove very good for it's age! i mean things like brakes what do u need them for you would pump the pedal twice just to get a little bit of brakes! here it is when i first got home! after along trip back from katanning towing it with my 1hz 80! lets just say i had a loaded semi overtake me up a hill!

after much digging i found some nasty cracks in the chassis and some bad rust in the front crossmember so i decided to strip it completely! one of the biggest things i have ever taken on! anyway three weeks later i had it stripped to a rolling chassis, mostly working after work or on the weekends! it was very tidy even including the original owners manual that was half eaten by rats! and the original travel light that plugs into the glovebox! and the original toolkit! even the old f motor runs like a clock even with a stuffed carby!
anyway here are some pics of the happenings! am loving it! the bankaccount is feeling it! just got my trade certificate! (cabby) so am getting some more money! but it soon dissappears!

most recent just finished rebuilding the front diff! i didn't bother pulling the center as it didn't make any funny noises, the oil was good no chunks! and doesn't have excess backlash! even the cv's were fine just repacked them did everything else swivel hub kit, wheel bearings, rebuilt wheel cylinders, new shoes, cleaned, cleaned and cleaned then primed and painted all with engine enamel! just finished adjusting up wheel cylinders, also all new tie rod ends, cleaned up old steering arms and painted, all new bolts as well!

I only have a little bit more welding on the chassis! and then that will be ready! then onto the rear diff! then new leafs, ect!on it goes! slowly one bit at a time! Also work is on going my other fourby, the 80! keeping on top of maintenance and mods and repairs!so might not touch the 45 sometimes for a couple weeks ,cheers Clayton!

I know I sound like a broken record but you got to love a 40 series. Looks good for it's age looking forward to seeing this buildup. Keep the pics coming. :thumb:
Who cares what 4wd you have just get out and use it.
MK Triton 2.8L TD a few mods goes alright.

There is nothing like a 40! this is my second and after its finished it's not going anywhere but on trips and being parked in my garage! haha next on the list is to finish the chassis and do the rear diff! i regret getting rid of my other 40 but considering i swapped it for a 80 i'm pretty happy! here is a pic of my old 40! took me two years to finish just fixing her up!

well did abit more tonight! have been fairly full on at work! and i also picked up a new daily driver! more toys! which needs a new set of coil packs! so money is going else where atm that and my 80! am preparing for easter! any way the sump was leaking really bad on the old f, so pulled it off and it's amazing what regular oil changes do, after 40years of little short trips around farms, that and pulling and lugging sometimes 4 ton as my uncle told me after i got it! :D it looks fairly good the bores look good as far as i can see, the camshaft does look abit worn, i will see what it's gonna cost for a new one! also prepping the rear diff to get the same treatment as the front! anyway here are some pics!

whats left off one of the rear bump stops!

well abit more done today! i pulled the sump of because it had a chronic leak, coming from some where, couldn't see where was just pouring out! so cleaned it up today and found that because of the bash plate on the bottom it has rusted between the two and because the sump's thinner then the bash plate it gave way first, so i spent hours cleaning the sump up trying to get everything out between the sump and the bashplate, got it looking pretty good, then started to solder it up! bit of a mission on my 5th attempt and it's still leaking! i might end up cutting the entire of the sump of and welding a new piece on? unless a 2f sump will fit it? anyway will have another couple cracks at it! also got the rear diff on the bench and pulled the drums off, getting a start on it!

Also pulled the rear calipers of the 80 as i almost had accident the other day was pulling a mates boat, yes it did have brakes but they obviously weren't adjusted properly, it was raining a little bit and i was coming down a small hill to a t intersection, i was taking it easy anyway, plus with all the killawasps! of the 1hz we weren't going fast! i started to slow down and the front wheels just locked up! just about went right through the intersection into the bush! was freaking out! :petrified: :petrified: back brakes weren't working at all! even with five people in the car! so been busy with that aswell!
both calipers the seals were stuffed and had lots of dirt and junk so pulled them completely apart and going to put all new seals in, also will have a look at the rear bias valve as well once i have the calipers back on!

great buildup, its awesome seeing so many of the oldies getting some love and being used once again, they dont deserve to sit in paddocks rusting away forever, looking forward to more of your progress!
