Binns Track Condition Report, North of Ross Hwy

Unread post by emjan » July 31st, 2014, 8:23 pm

We travelled the Binns Track 2 weeks ago from Plenty Hwy down through to Ross Hwy before heading back to Alice Springs.

The road was more corrugated than last November when we travelled the same stretch, & half way between the last closed gate & the turnoff to the Arltunga Tourist road there is a bulldust hole which shouldn't cause too much grief being about 30-40cm deep & a reasonable dip in the road.

But heading east along the Arltunga Tourist Rd/Binns Track, travelling around 60kms towing our 1.5ton camper trailer with tyre pressures around 25psi we drove over a small rise just before the locked gate some way west of Ambilindum & encountered a deep ditch across the road.

A bone crunching thud made us get out & check for damage after we'd passed over it. Everything looked ok so we continued on to Alice & setting up camp. Over the week our steering deteriorated & I booked the ol girl into the local Tyrepower who found one of the front wheel rims had buckled on the inside & the tyre had worn unevenly.

NT Infrastructure, being the pack of wankers they are, refused to accept liability & said that the drain was probably there for a reason. Yeah, to kill drivers. We were told stupid stuff like: drive to conditions, we wouldn't have done the damage to the wheel rim if the tyre pressures hadn't been dropped. Wayne told him yep, we would've done the front end of our car instead, or blown a tyre under pressure, & if it's a required drain it should be a submerged pipe going across the road. The thing is we've driven this track at least 7 times over the last year & never had a flat tyre or sustained any damage to the vehicle up to now.

That's the thing with the NT Gov....you find people who know plenty about nothing, & nothing about everything else.

Take care if you're driving on this road. It's a great track but warrants respect.

So $750 later for a 2nd hand wheel rim & new tyre.....

Went for a little cruise along the Binns last Sunday & NT Infrastructure have graded the ditch out, making the track driveable to Arltunga, shame they didn't extend the grading along the Garden Track through to Stuart Hwy to get rid of a few corries
