Road conditions: Plenty Hwy NT from QLD border

Unread post by emjan » July 10th, 2015, 10:08 pm

With the Harts Range rodeo and races 3 weeks away just thought i'd mention the Plenty was graded early June 15 and a reasonably good drive heading in from the QLD border. East of Harts the road is beginning to get rough again after recent rains caused a bit of damage, but drivable.

Two months on and the Plenty has deteriorated pretty much. Travel from Atitjere to Bonya is very rough, corrugated and areas that have fallen away. Still not as bad as last year when we travelled by getting to that point.

Currently closed Bonya to the border due to flooding. Areas west of Harts Range under water but reasonably good traction substrata wise. Engawala road in poor condition with areas of flooded road. All areas likely to dry up over the next week or so, however Bonya to Harts Range very rough with sections washed out from previous rain.

Up here NE of Alice the rain has bucketed down across Engawala, North Eastern Binns Track off the Plenty, and through to Bonya. I haven't been further East than there but heard this week that Mt Isa and Boulia had between 4 and 8 inches of rain so likely the Donohue is still closed at the Qld/NT border. We had to drive back from Bonya on Wed after the rain had been falling for about 2 hours to Harts Range, which has not had a drop. It was a slow, painful drive. The Plenty is precariously slippery, nearly lost the work troopie at one stage where it went into a 360 spin at 40km with 2 wheels off the road in high box. It was mostly a slow drive in low box 4th gear the rest of the way home. Looking forward to driving back there again this Wed for an overnighter to have more of the same!

The NTAS pilot of the mail plane which flew into Harts yesterday said Jervois and Bonya had 4 ins of rain overnight Thurs and the airstrips unviable for landing. Pretty nice rain.
