What a great trip.
We are looking at going this summer to Tassie.
My idea was taking the day boat. Would that be a good idea?
We hope to leave Dec 28 back around Jan 15 or so. I can make the booking next week.

Thank you for your blog. I hope you keep it open for a bit so, I can do a bit of home work.

Thanks

Hi BigDutchy,

The Day boat wasn't an option for us on the days that we wanted to go over and back. From memory it looked like they had a few activities on board during the day to help keep people occupied. I think it looked like they had a band or bingo or something like that in one of the bars. It would be along time sitting around.

Whatever time you do decide to go, make sure you time your trip into the dock so that it doesn't correspond with peak hour traffic! When we left in the afternoon/night we were trying to negotiate our way there around 4:30pm so the traffic was pretty chaotic. Also there is not a lot of parking area around the dock until they open the gates for boarding, especially if you have a van and are hitched up.

When arriving back in Melbourne in the morning it was great as there was hardly any traffic and a lot easier to get out of the City.

Hi Big Dutchy,
I took the night boat to Tas and the day boat back to the mainland last year, and for this year's Tas trip I am night sailing both directions. The ocean is surprisingly boring to watch. I did get a long way through my book though. All I saved was $24 or so, but pretty much wasted an entire day.
