The Oodnadatta Track

Unread post by emjan » July 19th, 2013, 10:43 pm

We travelled the Oody Track 17/18 June 13, coming up from Treworie through to Hawker, Lyndhurst & stopping for the night at Marree at the very basic but enjoyable outback Oasis Motel & Cara Park with a cheery mangaer who liked a chin wag. Good old hospitality. The showers were hot, there was a camp kitchen, the local pub was worth a visit, the bakery made the best pasties & pies & there were scenic flights over Lake Eyre for those wanting to see it all.

The Oody Track itself was constantly variable from dry, sandy, sections to bogs that had to be bypassed on slimy clay side roads, corrugations to stony sections. We aired down to 25psi for the trip & the Navara handled all conditions well. There was one section of road flooded but it posed no problem for us.

The landscape was ancient, rugged, beautiful & isolated, changing constantly with each curve in the road & as we drove over hills. The colours & vegetation changed according to the conditions & we were spellbound by it all.

We travelled from Marree to Marla in 10hrs, after we discovered 92kms south side of Oodnadatta that we'd stone damaged the rear canopy window so needed to get to Alice Springs before the weekend to get a replacement. It was a long drive, sometimes challenging but very worthwhile. We'll do it again, but slower next time.

The track looked real good What was it like into Lake Eyre
If it is called common sense
then why is it so uncommon

The track was good though there were a few boggy sections around. We didn't have the time to thoroughly explore Lake Eyre so stopped by its southern section. We couldn't get close to the lake itself at the ground was quite soft for walking, it looked very white as though clouds were reflected off its watery surface but had been told earlier that it was dry so it was the salt we could see.

We'd love to do it again sometime but a bit slower than the first time round. We're heading back to Vic after Christmas so might go that way again or when we're heading north again sometime in Feb. That's the plan, anyway.

Well maintained vehicle, appropriate tyres, snorkel, breathers, suspension, camping gear, etc. It's a great track but drive to conditions with a bit of tyre deflation and you'll be ok. I've driven plenty (sic) that are much worse here in the NT
