When people talk about going to the Painted Desert, is it Arckaringa that people go? Say from the oodnadatya track, Arckaringa, Cadney Park that people travel???

Yep, but off Ood Rd rather then the track itself.
Good camping / facs at Arckaringa, worth it for a sunset and sunrise esp if you like taking photos.

The Breakaways are also worth a drive through further south for similar terrain, colours, views . . . just north of Coober Pedy (about 17km), a little triangle section road goes from Ood Rd to Stuart Hwy.
Same range system, nice view from the lookout.

Oh yeah, there is also Painted Hills, located on Anna Ck property.
Think it is only accessible to viewing from the air (Wrights Air out of William Ck), but you could call Anna Ck and confirm.

Yep, got it thanks Les. Turn off from oodnadatta/coober pedy road.

looks like the road i wanted to take past Evelyn Downs back to the oodnadataa/coober road is shut due to the rains in the last month. Will need to head west to cadney park station instead.

Yes kc, that would be an interesting way to travel sometime, I haven't done that route myself either.

Even though the roads normally dry out and reopen reasonably quickly normally, being a secondary type of road up there I'd say the Evelyn Downs route might be a while getting back in action.
Besides the obvious delta it runs through possibly holding water a while, it would get far less attention that Ood Rd/Tk, or the main Arckaringa Tk.

We've travelled the oodnadatya track 3 times before. Apart from Coward springs, are there any other springs worth stopping at? We were hoping to look at something new this time through.

At the moment were targeting strangeway springs and the springs across the road from coward springs (theres a short board walk i've been told) but canot recall their name.

There's heaps down the Ood Tk, yes the Mound Spring Cons area just south of Coward Springs is worth a look, turn off on the other side of the track, well signed, only about 7km from memory.
Blanche Cup and the Bubbler, very easy board walk to see these seperately just a stones throw between them.

Other places down the track . . . from Farina up, heading up the track from the Flinders . . . you'll have gone through most of these but will list them anyway.

Farina :) good camping $5 per person, fantastic place, old ruins, much early cameleer history, and bakery open now most of the time
Maree, some great stuff in the town to see, lots of Tom Kruse and Ghan rail memorabilia, the pub is pretty good for this too (as well as a good countery) old pics etc, not to mention cold beer :)
Plane Henge between Marree and Borefield Tk is good to stop for a wandr through, and up the creek to the hoverbus.
If coming out Borefield Track . . .
Lake Eyre South viewing area
Curdimurka siding (where they hold the infamous annual B&S ball)
Mound Springs (about 12km detour, ~ 7km on left before Coward Springs)
Coward Springs, private camping ground, good facs, natural spa
Beresford siding ruins a great example and fairly intact, shelter there and good camp too
Halligan Bay detour / camp
William Ck, pub, info across road in park, flight ?
Old Peake ruins, well worth a detour, 32km return, old pastoral / mines ruins
Algebuckina Bridge and Waterhole (decent camping at the waterhole)
Ood Pink Roadhouse for fuel and burger, old open air cinema in the main st, pub not bad, lots of photo opps in town.

If going further north towards Mt Dare you'll pass an historic Telegraph pole and signage, drive across Foggerty claypan, can stop at Hamilton Stn for a look, great accom, facs, and camping, friendly folk, fuel if needed, then Eringa waterhole to stop at, Kidmans first property ruins on the south side, in a bit along the waterhole, historic stockyards on other side just south of Lindsay Ck.
Bloods turn to old windmill, ruins further along that track, or turn up to Mt Dare.

Obviously you might not be taking that route north of Oodnadatta, but worth a mention.
