Vic High Country Feb 2014

Unread post by Hilux 106R » March 24th, 2014, 3:10 pm

Dad and I headed off for our annual vic high country pilgrimage from SA. We share the driving and photography. From Mansfield we headed into the wonnangatta valley via king billy track and then descending down zeka spur ( tracks are in great condition, easy) The wonnangatta valley floor was very dry, we were expecting lush green grass seen in photos but were presented with the opposite. We headed for dargo via herne spur which was steep and loose. Cynthia Range track was a very nice smooth access track. Once in dargo we had a cutla frothies and steak sandwich and headed for Blue Rag. (One thing about this trip was that we didnt plan to well, all the tracks were to far apart and we spent to much time on rough high country dirt roads). Blue Rag was very scenic and amazing views the track is easy, a v steep dirt road). We then headed back to dargo and camped in upper dargo.

Billy Goats was on the cards. We had done this track in 2011 and it had only one loose section at the top. The track condition has changed alot its alot more rough also very dusty but it is febuary after all. As sson as you turn onto billy goats your into it steep loose climbs the prados traction control flickering away. Mid way up past the heli pad there were large whoops which you wouldnt want to hit to hard. We made it up no dramas would recomend a lift and one locker or traction control. Again we headed into licola and drove forever again on high country dirt roads to walhalla where we wanted to tackle fultons crk track. Was a bit moist, we headed down cautiosuly from the dam side. The track has been graded recently but it was a bit slushy under foot. The hill climbs are fairly loose, with small steps here and there. The water crossing exits are off camber in places as they run along the banks. One crossing we had the water over the bonnet (a first for us coming from sa). Quite a good track.

In total was a awesome trip while on the tracks, the high country dirt roads get a bit annoying...but thats a lesson learnt to plan the low range tracks closer together.

great photos, we were on billy goat and blue rag on the march longweekend and the traffic was like peak hour in melbourne. at the helipad we stopped in the last bit of ground to park on . must of been 7/8 cars there and maybe 20 on the top of blue rag
your trip looks like you went at the right time

Yeah I can Imagine! believe it or not we went in the middle of the working week and did not pass one car on any of the tracks. Was an unusual sight for us haha.
