High Country Getaway!!!

Unread post by red23 » March 7th, 2014, 5:54 pm

Friday the 28th feb to sunday the 2nd march

After deciding with a mate during the week to do a swag trip before we new it friday had rocked around,
So with the cars packed and work finished we bailed out around 8pm heading for around trig track area,
i found myself with a overheating shorty, so we fell short and ended up setting up camp at coopers creek
at around 10:30.
Up bright and early the next morning i found the issue to be the thermostat so with a quick removal of
the problem child and a quick refill down the creek we were straight into the maps.
After a slight change of plan we headed over the creek and north up maiden town track and onto deep creek
no 1 track. As we made our way down the track to the creek (clearing trees along the way), we couldnt help but notice the track was getting more interesting as we got further.(wouldn't do this track without good clearence and at minimum 33's)

After getting through to the end of the track which took around 2.5 hours (both shorties are on 35's) we reavaluated our plan
and decided to start heading for camp so we kept heading north till we reached fultons track which we headed down aiming to cross trig track and onto camp by the river, Once on the river we noticed the water level was right down so with yet another decision to consult the map we kept heading up on what i believe is cfm track until we reached army track, with a
left hand turn onto army track we found ourselves doin a rather steep but docile decent down to lloyds hut at the intersection
of donnely creek and army, a brief stop at lloyds we discovered it already occupied so another quick map consultation and we decided on our original plan of mcalister river area for camp saturday.

Jumped back in the car and cruised east on donnely till we got to black range track, With a quick run down black range we found ourselves at the start of burgoynes. Half way down we came to the macalister river which at this stage was us for the night,
Quick russle around for fire wood (which there was no shortage of) and dinner was on the go after a couple of tinnies and a reflection on the days adventure we called it a night.

Once again up at the crack of dawn, decided on a spot of fishing (nothing around except carp) while firing up the bacon and eggs we managed to have a rod pulled from the holder and towed down the river.(yet another carp)

With brekky done and 12 buckets of water on the fire we were off again, finishing the rest of burgoynes we decided to take a quick run to licola. (for a stuby holder) Then it was a uturn and we headed for hickey track (good climb to nice veiws)
once up hickey it was a right turn onto mount margaret track then onto 20 acre creek track (by this time i was getting excited about getting to heyfield for a gas top up) only to find that at the intersection of 20 acre and chomley 20 acre had been dug up with trees put across (closed from here to main road) this didnt help the fuel situation. headed down chomley to the next track to find it had also been closed and signed private property. So the next quickest route to heyfield was the go once in heyfield we aired up, fueled up and headed for the highway
