After Mitchell falls we headed to Surveyors pool.

From here we were off to Walsh point at port warrender, the drive out here had quite a tropical feel to it. This is the first view you get of the ocean and it was a welcome sight.

Image

Once you get closer to the end the track gets severely rocky, this was one of the slowest sections of track I've ever driven, it wasn't difficult just rough as rocks for what felt like forever.

Yet again no fish.

There's a couple of sandy beach spots but aren't accessible without a boat.

Image

Strange rock off in the distance, looks a bit unnatural with it's squareness.

From here it was time to head back and get onto the gibb again and continue south, with another quick stop at Drysdale for another burger and a couple of beers. That night was spent out the back of mount Barnett roadhouse near the manning river where we caught up with the boys from vic and got on the gas that night. The following day we were all a little late to rise, a big feed of bacon and eggs soon sorted that out though, not long later we parted ways with Jake, Mark and Damo as they were heading back upto mount Elizabeth station to tackle to Munja track to Walcott inlet.

Next stop was Galvans gorge.

Image

Then onto Bell gorge.

Image
Image

And Lennard river gorge, not much happening.

A quick detour to see Windjana and Tunnel creek was next, Windjana is one of the most bizarre places I've ever seen, looks out of this world or from a lord of the rings movie or something.

There are plenty of freshies getting around Windjana, at this one spot I think the count was upto just over 30 that we could see.

Didn't get too many pics at Tunnel creek as it's pretty dark in there.

Looking back at the entrance.

Image

About halfway through it opens up for a moment.

Image

Looking in from the exit.

Image

This little freshy was hiding out in the tunnel, scared more than a few people in there. It must have been freezing as it's pretty cold in the tunnel.

After Windjana/Tunnel creek we headed to Derby and Broome.

Sunset in Derby.

Prison Boab near derby.

Spent a night in Broome before heading up the road towards cape Leveque, can't remember exactly where we stayed but it was only 20-30kms up where there is a heap of places to stay on the western side of the Dampier peninsula. This was one of my favourite places on this trip, white sand, clear blue water, could've stayed here a long time.

Thanks mate. Yea it was too good, wicked part of the country, all I want to do is travel oz now, there's just this work thing in the way.

The clothesline.

Image

More fishing without the fish. There were a couple of tinnies that headed out while we were there that did ok with a metre plus Spanish mackerel.

Image

One of many hermit crabs on the beach.

Crab racing tournament ring. Rules are simple, pick your racing hermit crab and the first out the ring wins.

View from where we camped.

Purnululu was next on the list, on the way we took a detour down the tanami to the Wolfe creek crater.

Still in the southern section is Cathedral gorge which has an amphitheatre at the end.

Image
Image
Image

In the northern section we trekked into Echidna chasm.

Image

Gets pretty tight at the end.

Image

There's a few big rocks that have fallen from above, thankfully most are all large enough to jam in well above head height, definitely don't want something like that coming down on you, even the small ones that have hit the ground would be enough to kill or seriously injure someone.

Image

View of the sky at the end of the chasm.

Image

From here we headed back to my mates place for a couple of days rest before he had to go back to work and I had to head a few thousand kms south home.

Was an awesome trip and one I'd like to do again but with 4 months away instead of 4 weeks as there is too much to see and it would've been good to stay at a few if not most places for a few days at least.

It was rather depressing once I got back to work but you got to work to fund such trips. Can't wait for the next one.

Thanks a lot for uploading all this - awesome work. We did the Kimberley in May, and miss it already!

You did well, covering so much in only 4 weeks
