any one ever made a 12volt fridge?

Unread post by highflyer » December 13th, 2014, 4:18 pm

so basically I have made an esky out of some fridge panel that I got off a job, and am curious if any one has ever made a 12 volt fridge, I have found a couple of compressors on eBay for common brands like Waco replacements, wondering what would be involved in making it work, my refrigeration experience is limited but I know the basic components and have full access to all the things I need just need to know how??

Need to get out more

there are companies that make refrigerated boxes for the back of utes, so there are parts available. They may run off an engine mounted compressor, or run off 12 volt. many years ago, I had a brainwave and thought Id be able to make an aircon unit for a car that runs on the same principle as a gas fridge, so I had a kero frigde, which I cut up, and mounted on a pallet, with a brigs & Stratton mower engine feeding the exhaust pipe thu the heat exchanger where the pilot light used to go. I cooled the freezer elements very well, and I thought I was onto a winner idea, gunna patent it etc etc, then I was reading a motor magazine and read that Mercedes had patented this new Aircon idea which drew no power from the engine and worked off the heat of the exhaust!!! "F***%$!!! Bastards pinched my idea!

Pretty sure one of the big companies offer kits for it..
Forget if it is waeco, Engel or one of the others.
I think generally the fridges have a little better insulation than an esky and not sure it works out that much cheaper..
But yes it can certainly be done..

Kits for making custom fridges are available. They get used a lot on boats.

Google "engel kit" and look at the images, there are a few to look at.
